Leander Kahney is the editor and publisher of Cult of Mac.
Leander is a longtime technology reporter and the author of six acclaimed books about Apple, including two New York Times bestsellers: Jony Ive: The Genius Behind Apple’s Greatest Products and Inside Steve’s Brain, a biography of Steve Jobs.
He’s also written a top-selling biography of Apple CEO Tim Cook and authored Cult of Mac and Cult of iPod, which both won prestigious design awards. Most recently, he was co-author of Cult of Mac, 2nd Edition.
Leander has been reporting about Apple and technology for nearly 30 years.
Before founding Cult of Mac as an independent publication, Leander was news editor at Wired.com, where he was responsible for the day-to-day running of the Wired.com website. He headed up a team of six section editors, a dozen reporters and a large pool of freelancers. Together the team produced a daily digest of stories about the impact of science and technology, and won several awards, including several Webby Awards, 2X Knight-Batten Awards for Innovation in Journalism and the 2010 MIN (Magazine Industry Newsletter) award for best blog, among others.
Before being promoted to news editor, Leander was Wired.com’s senior reporter, primarily covering Apple. During that time, Leander published a ton of scoops, including the first in-depth report about the development of the iPod. Leander attended almost every keynote speech and special product launch presented by Steve Jobs, including the historic launches of the iPhone and iPad. He also reported from almost every Macworld Expo in the late ’90s and early ‘2000s, including, sadly, the last shows in Boston, San Francisco and Tokyo. His reporting for Wired.com formed the basis of the first Cult of Mac book, and subsequently this website.
Before joining Wired, Leander was a senior reporter at the legendary MacWeek, the storied and long-running weekly that documented Apple and its community in the 1980s and ’90s.
Leander has written for Wired magazine (including the Issue 16.04 cover story about Steve Jobs’ leadership at Apple, entitled Evil/Genius), Scientific American, The Guardian, The Observer, The San Francisco Chronicle and many other publications.
Leander has a postgrad diploma in artificial intelligence from the University of Aberdeen, and a BSc (Hons) in experimental psychology from the University of Sussex.
He has a diploma in journalism from the UK’s National Council for the Training of Journalists.

Looks good if it is.
Definitely an evolution of the design.
It looks legit, could very well be another chinese fake though..
1) Not sure why, but the image is backwards
2) Look at the pixel difference between the hands and the phone
The photo is faked, not sure if the phone is or not
Totally fake. If it’s real, where’d the mute toggle and volume buttons go?
Oh God Oh God Oh God, what if it is? More significantly, what if it ISN’T? I can’t stand this not knowing. How can we be expected to eat, breathe, sleep or work without knowing? Our very lives and the continued existence of the planet depend on what the iPhone 5 will look like. (and these incessant rumors really keep jacking up the hit count, which makes advertisers happy)
The image has been mirrored from the original on BGR.
Wheres camera? :/
Why are the hands in this picture so much more pixelated than the phone?
To me it looks kind of real, like Apple designed this. But #1 Where`s the Volume buttons and #2 it looks like the pic was taken backwards………..
The image is flipped
… which explains the volume button issue. You answered your own question.
OH YEAH… it’s definitely fake. Look at the angle of the top of the phone compared to the top of the screen. Pointing in different directions.
hi all, I rather doubt it, all the iphone are the volume buttons on the left.
There might also disappear hardware buttons, as rumored, and leave onlythe home and power buttons
That’s certainly it.

all think the same, there seems to be here more than one who knows what he’s talking
I saw one just like this phone on the Metro here in DC. I thought it looked weird at first glance, very iPhone like, but not any iPhone I’ve seen. The guy put it away before I could turn back around and take another look.
The image is flipped ffs
There is something really wrong with the hand below the phone ….
Not real. I know it a mirror image. But I think Apple is gonna switch mute and volume buttons to other side for iPhone 5; make for easier photo taking with volume button in iOS 5.
guess another duplicated piece from china…
I hope not as it doesn’t look too revolutionary, God the tension is killing me LOL!! : D
Notice how the screen is reversed
Looks fake to me. I hope it’s fake.
yes i’ve seen it on Maclife
There are three red flags for me. One is that there’s a home button (and we have strong evidence to suggest that there won’t be one), the hands are very pixelated like the people before me mentioned, and the screen is mirrored.
It’s possible that it’s a knock off or just a photoshop attempt for publicity.
If the image is flipped, then where is the sim card slot? Aren’t the French GSM? If it was taken in the States, then it could be mistaken for a CDMA, but not in Europe.
Sim card tray, anybody?
Apple will tell us in good time. Until then, go about your lives and TRY to remain sane. Nothing turns people off to you faster than a thin line of drool and a vacant, dreamy expression…
I just paid $22.85 for an iPhone 4-32GB and my girlfriend loves her Panasonic Lumix GF 1 Camera that we got for $38.76 there arriving tomorrow by UPS. I will never pay such expensive retail prices in stores again. Especially when I also sold a 40 inch LED TV to my boss for $674 which only cost me $62.81 to buy. Here is the website we use to get it all from, CentHub.com
the image flips when you take it with photobooth
Here’s my theory, the iPhone 4 will be on the market for nearly 15 months before there is another version, so i think that Apple is going to surprise us with two new versions, the one would be an upgraded version of the iPhone which would cover the niche of the iPhone 3GS an the pre-paid market (this version would be the one pictured above), the second version and more surprising one will be the one with bigger screen, better photo camera and will fit the cases that recently started to pop up on the Chinese markets, that is what I am expecting after the comment from Tim Cook that they’re not just for the rich and after many surveys that found the iPhone was not covering 60-70percent of the market (the prepaid part)
so that none recognizes their hands.
i don’t like the design
Bad photoshop job of Chinese knockoff.
I hope that’s not it. I’m hoping for a bump up in screen size.
so where is that gesture home button and where are the volume buttons its flipped so maybe they moved the buttons the right of the device
Haha, good catch, didn’t even notice that the first time around
Does it have a screen protector on? Where the front cam is, looks a bit indented? Not like that on an iPhone 4.
I fully agree. As the iPod market shrinks and new iPod models could not support an entire Apple event, 2 new iPhones will be the new stars of what used to be the September Apple music show. iPhone 5 is to re-establish Apple’s innovation leadership position in the smart phone market with a brand new design, thin body, and a larger screen. It is designed to look and perform as the best mobile on the market. Anything else would simply not be released by Apple into today’s hugely competitive landscape and battle with Android. And with the 3GS now obsolete in the world of hi-res displays and no longer a worthy member of Apple best in class products, iPhone 4S is to take its place as an entry-level, pre-paid device. I can imagine Apple is not so secretive about this model and is actually showing it around the operators while it keeps the 5 under wraps. The pic above might be a fake but I subscribe to the 4S lighter, thinner, cheaper theory.
Finally, the recent conflicting reports (big vs. small update) support the 2-model strategy. So lets look forward to September!

looks bigger
cant wait for the 5 and 4g connectivity. Hopefully they add flash idk why apple is so anti-flash they would sell more units.

Weird, I don’t really care as much as when the 4 was coming out. Maybe it has something to do with being raped by AT&T on a monthly basis. Such a great phone, such lousy networks.
We’ll all know by 15th of September
I think that the new iPhone 5 will have the same design. People are agree with this prediction : http://www.beansight.com/predi…
on the top? this is where it was before iphone 4.
