Leander Kahney is the editor and publisher of Cult of Mac.
Leander is a longtime technology reporter and the author of six acclaimed books about Apple, including two New York Times bestsellers: Jony Ive: The Genius Behind Apple’s Greatest Products and Inside Steve’s Brain, a biography of Steve Jobs.
He’s also written a top-selling biography of Apple CEO Tim Cook and authored Cult of Mac and Cult of iPod, which both won prestigious design awards. Most recently, he was co-author of Cult of Mac, 2nd Edition.
Leander has been reporting about Apple and technology for nearly 30 years.
Before founding Cult of Mac as an independent publication, Leander was news editor at Wired.com, where he was responsible for the day-to-day running of the Wired.com website. He headed up a team of six section editors, a dozen reporters and a large pool of freelancers. Together the team produced a daily digest of stories about the impact of science and technology, and won several awards, including several Webby Awards, 2X Knight-Batten Awards for Innovation in Journalism and the 2010 MIN (Magazine Industry Newsletter) award for best blog, among others.
Before being promoted to news editor, Leander was Wired.com’s senior reporter, primarily covering Apple. During that time, Leander published a ton of scoops, including the first in-depth report about the development of the iPod. Leander attended almost every keynote speech and special product launch presented by Steve Jobs, including the historic launches of the iPhone and iPad. He also reported from almost every Macworld Expo in the late ’90s and early ‘2000s, including, sadly, the last shows in Boston, San Francisco and Tokyo. His reporting for Wired.com formed the basis of the first Cult of Mac book, and subsequently this website.
Before joining Wired, Leander was a senior reporter at the legendary MacWeek, the storied and long-running weekly that documented Apple and its community in the 1980s and ’90s.
Leander has written for Wired magazine (including the Issue 16.04 cover story about Steve Jobs’ leadership at Apple, entitled Evil/Genius), Scientific American, The Guardian, The Observer, The San Francisco Chronicle and many other publications.
Leander has a postgrad diploma in artificial intelligence from the University of Aberdeen, and a BSc (Hons) in experimental psychology from the University of Sussex.
He has a diploma in journalism from the UK’s National Council for the Training of Journalists.

50 responses to “Haters Accuse Apple Of Ripping Off Samsung. UPDATE: Certified Bullshit!”
The picture is incorrect as the F700 was announced February 2007 and released later that December.

This story is totally stupid, Samsung along with all other unoriginal loser companies have been desparately trying to ride on Apple’s coatails to no avail. I have used several copycat phones and tablets and nobody can even come close to Apple. It’s amazing to me, these companies have their hands on amazing Apple products for years and they try and try to copy them but end up creating crap as usual. Samsung and everyone else, aren’t you ashamed of yourselves? Be original, come up with your own ideas instead of stealing other people’s.
LOL @ AppleHaters. Well done, sir.
yeah. apple saw it and quickly got it ready and working in less than a year.
I think both suits are wrong, what else can a phone look like if it’s not a flip or keyboard phone or something?
Also, from the official Samsung website. A February 8, 2007 press release. http://www.samsung.com/us/news…
Of course this is BS. A quick seach on the ever so popular search engine beginning with ‘G’ reveals all. Regardless, even if they had ripped the design off, it isn’t about ‘who did it the first?’, it is about ‘who does it the best?’ and clearly the answer is Apple. They will always have the advantage in both software and hardware.
Just a coincidence IMO. I’m sure Apple was working on the iPhone long before Samsung came up with their phone anyway.
Apple has one of the best design teams in the world. If not the best one in many ways. Do you really thing they need to copy?

the hands that are holding the phones are identical – load of concocted bollocks!
Plus, the Samsung lovers spell-checkers are broken, to “BEING” with. :D
Not the best design team, the most Brand focused team.
Others are good also, only unfocused and spineless!

Bull the kind of BBC and EuroNews (those two are the most antiApple) will believe in.
The update makes the poll valueless, n’est pas?
The iPhone was in development for years… It was all thier own work, not a copy cat rip off.
Even if it had been released before the iPhone, years and years of work went into designing the iPhone, it wasn’t just thrown together in a couple months.
Well, it should be obvious to any lawyer with an IQ lower than 10 that the iPhone is just a rip off of the Samsung: They are both phones (that alone is enough to seal the iPhone’s fate), they both have screens to display information (when was the last time you ever saw a phone with a screen–before the Samsung, I mean), both have icons to represent applications and functions (Apple had never thought of using icons for *anything* before the Samsung), and they both have black cases (how unoriginal of Apple to steal our unique color). I mean, really–how could anyone question the “logic” here?
Really shame on you AppleHaters… AppleHaters really don’t know what is shame mean…
I think Jonny Ive will laugh his ass out when he read this article… Jonny Ive is the Best product designer in the World and earn many awards… How dare he copy this lousy Samsung design? Some more this Samsung reveal this product not on 2006 it’s feb 2007. This is absolutely making news and try to hurt Apple. This not hurt Apple but shame on AppleHaters.
so who stole whose design now??? its preety confusing now..
Well, the release date of Samsung F700 is incorrect to begin with. And it doesn’t really matter – unfortunately – who came up with the design first. What matters is who owns the patent – and in this case it’s Apple.
Good one sir! ;-)
iPhone’s design was just a natural evolution of what was previously done by other brands (earlier PDA’s, Qtek smartphones like the S1xx and 200…, LG Prada with capacitative display…). The iPhone was revolutionary, but I think that it wasn’t because of the design of its hardware.
If you want to see how the Galaxy S stacks up against the iPhone in the terms of the trademarks Apple is accusing Samsung of infringing, check out these charts / infographics:
