In a move that’s a bit like thumbing his brush at the lawyers who sent a nastygram when we mistakenly reported David Hockney’s gallery artworks were created on his iPhone, the artist is offering free downloads of three wallpapers made on his device.
The unsigned trio of flower paintings from the 72-year-old pop artist maestro — painted with the Brushes app on his iPhone (it’s revealed for certain this time) — do sort of look like something you could do yourself.

Still, these are the quick sketches Hockney makes daily and sends to friends and family. He likes the fact he’s giving them away, saying “my real vanity is the vanity of artists, I like my work to be seen.”

The wallpapers are offered gratis to promote a BBC documentary on Hockney and are only available for the next 48 hours.

IIRC, Hockney some years ago was experimenting with faxes to make prints, and of course before that he was doing multi-perspective collages of photos, so he’s no stranger to experimenting with consumer tech. Nice to see he’s still trying new things.

You think these “sort of look like something you could do yourself,” eh?
Keep dreaming. These are both beautiful and very distinctly “Hockneyesque.”
