Since launching the CDMA iPhone for Verizon back in February, Apple has been producing two models of the iPhone 4: one for AT&T, and one for Verizon. A dual-mode iPhone 5 with support for both CDMA and GSM networks seems like a no-brainer next time around, then, and according to at least one iOS app developer, the device is all but confirmed by logs that show a dual-mode device in testing.
Unsurprisingly, this particular developer doesn’t want to be named, but according to TechCrunch, they have logs that show their app was tested by what looks to be a dual-mode iPhone 5:
The logs show that the app has been briefly tested by a handful of people using what is almost certainly an iPhone 5, evidently running iOS 5, sporting two distinct sets of mobile network codes (MNC) / mobile country codes (MCC). Those codes can be used to uniquely identify mobile carriers.
Sure enough, some registrations for the app – which the developer also asked not to be named – were logged from a new Apple device, using the MNC/MCC codes from both Verizon and AT&T.
Of course, the news isn’t all that surprising, having already been ‘confirmed’ by Verizon’s CFO back in May, but it’s certainly a little more reassuring to those hoping for a dual-band iPhone 5. It will mean that Apple can wave goodbye to producing two different models of the iPhone, simply to support two different carriers.
