How far in advance would Apple film a commercial for the second-generation iPad? Depending on the answer to that question, Apple might be readying the iPad 2 for release, getting an ad in the can for next April… or, well, not filming an ad for the iPad 2 at all.
According to sources speaking to 9to5Mac, Apple has hired British photographer David Sims to make a commercial for the iPad 2, which he began filming last month at Pier 59 in New York.
Not that the iPad 2 was actually in hand, of course: participants in the shoot say they were handed first-generation iPads to wave around during the commercial, which would be replaced in post-production with the second generation model. Despite this, security was tight.
It’s hard to really gauge what this report means. I seriously doubt the iPad 2 will be coming out before April of next year, so why would Apple film an iPad 2 commercial so far ahead of time? I suppose it’s possible that they had their heart set on Sims, whose schedule would only accommodate a shoot so far in advance of the iPad 2’s official debut, but my guess is that despite reports to the contrary, this was a shoot for a first-gen iPad commercial.
