Cult of Mac Contest: Name Mystery Apple Object, Win T-shirt
7:36 am, November 2nd, 2009, Nicole Martinelli

The fourth in a series of five t-shirt giveaways, correctly name this mystery Apple item and you could win a T-shirt.
Not just any T-shirt: choose from the Apple-inspired designs at might tees, which include the I Love Lisa we wrote about, a retro-style logo and Steve Jobs in typeface.

The tees are made with water-based eco inks screen printed on high quality tri-blend shirts (part organic cotton, part recycled rayon and polyester) and a $28-$36 value.
We’ll chose a winner at random from correct answers — this time leave them in the comments but specify object and model, e.g. “Apple IIGS.”
Contest ends midnight, November 3.

Disk drive off a Mac Quadra. I am betting many a paperclip was used to force eject floppies out of there. LOL!

Easy peasy… it’s a Quadra 700. Man, how I wanted one of those as a kid!!!

As a Boston-based illustrator and designer, I “fondly” remember working Quark/PageMaker, Illustrator/FreeHand and Photoshop on this System 6 machine … as well as the resulting daily system crashes, screaming project managers and career-related stress. Thanks for the memories.

I had this computer working as a clock in my college house. When you would shut it down, it would turn itself back on.

The mystery item this week is a Macintosh Quadra 700, although i must say the pic is missleading… its been fliped, the vents are to the left of the drive!
Hope I win!

Well, this machine could be:
a Mac IIci or a Mac IIcx or a Quadra 700, they all share the same box design
and from what we are shown, …. I cannot tell which one it is.
Consensus seems to be Quadra 700
Ken, on November 2nd, 2009 at 10:05 am
I studied on Quadra 700’s. The lab had other (faster) Mac’s but the “pc-design” designers got to those first. The creative ones were having espresso’s and biscotti while sketching before heading to the lab. Someone once put a second SCSI SyQuest Drive (remember those?) with the same SCSI address as the first drive on “my” Quadra. As a result, my 44MB Disc copied it’s Desktop DB to my 200MB Backup Disc. I lost all my work… In my graduating year. I got so stressed I caught pneumonia (according to the doctors). I had to stay home for 2 weeks (rent a Mac from the $tore) and recreate all my work while keeping up with class… I hated those machines… Oh by the way, the image has been horizontally flipped. Nice try Nicole.

Bert Vanderveen, on November 2nd, 2009 at 10:20 am
I’m confused by this image. If it truly is a IIcx/ci or Quad 700, from the perspective of the image – with the assumption that the box is turned on it’s side in “vertical” mode – then the horizontal slits should be to the LEFT of the vertical floppy port, not the right, as shown in the picture. Look at pics of these machines at lowendmac.com, for example, and you’ll see what I mean.

Hi!
It actually looks like the cover of my radiator in my office, but it is a Macintosh Quadra 700.

Patric Jernberg, on November 2nd, 2009 at 10:22 am
It’s a flipped image of a Quadra 700. The Quadra has the front vents perpendicular to the floppy slot, while the IIci and IIcx have grooves parallel to the slot. The floppy drive slot was nestled in a groove running along the width of the front on the IIci and IIcx; the groove wasn’t on the Quadra 700. Also, you can see two holes where rubber feet can be placed it you want to to lay down on its side rather than stand up as a minitower; the holes are in the slots to the side.
I still have a Quadra 700, and it was a workhorse for its time. I haven’t booted it up in a while – might have to do that.
Matt, on November 2nd, 2009 at 10:29 am
I agree with everyone here, it’s the Quadra 700. However, in looking at the photo is appears that the image is horizontally flipped. The actual Quadra 700 “grill lines” are on the left, not the right.
OregonMac7, on November 2nd, 2009 at 10:48 am
it’s a flipped image of a Quadra 700. In addition what people said before me, the led prism is horizontal in this one, on the other similar houses it would be vertical if you put the case in this upright position.
Also, I have one of these so I can easily recognize it.

It’s been rotated 90°, but it’s a shot of the floppy disk drive on an LCii…I believe…altho I’m clearly being outvoted by the Quadra folks.

Hmm, just like the Macintosh Quadra 700 I used to one. One SWEET box!
I believe it only had 2 screws, one of which was a grounding screw. A Beautiful example of DFM (Design For Manufacturing). Everything plugged in/snapped in. Very sweet. Upgraded the HD 2x. Was sad to let it go. . .
