20100319-ipwned.jpg

Tech site H-Online has an interesting story today, quoting security expert Charlie Miller about his forthcoming talk at the CanSecWest conference next week.
He says OS X is full of security holes. There are lots more than in Windows, he claims.
And yet: OS X is a safer system to use. Why? Because, in the words [...]

Apple Devotes Entire Home Page To Jerome York Obituary

20100318-york.jpg

If ever you needed a sign that Apple was a different kind of technology company, this is it.
What other computer manufacturer would remove its top-selling, hype-inducing, industry-altering new product from the prime spot on its website home page, and replace it with an obituary to an investor?
This is one of those “Here’s to the [...]

Cringe As Bikini Babes Smash “Unpatriotic” iPods in Anti-Apple Video

This video, from Drew Carey’s libertarian-leaning ReasonTV, is supposed to convince Americans that they shouldn’t buy iPods.

Why?

They may be “designed by Apple in California” but almost all of the 451-odd parts hail from abroad — the screen from Japan, the battery from Chile the CPU design from Britain — and it’s assembled, of course, in China. (The info comes from a 2007 report you can download the pdf here).

So the iPod, goes the ReasonTV argument, is not an American product.  Buying them is not patriotic — real patriots would take a hammer to them. (Though if you stick with the video until its nearly 10 minute conclusion, it comes back around to why buying them isn’t all bad for the US economy).

The beauty-bashing the foreign-made beast action happens at about 2:30.

Confession: I know I’m missing the point, but even watching these chicks smash what look like fake iPods makes me cringe.

I don’t care what they smash; if they’re wearin’ bikinis I’m watchin’.

Right on! I’d love to see US electronics stores bereft of goods where anything was created or built outside of the USA—they’d be much more peaceful and could be turned into large sheds to ‘jail’ people yelling “What the hell did you do, you morons? I WANT MY IPOD AND MY XBOX!”. Also, how much would those goods cost? I’ll bet many of those whingers would change their minds upon seeing a rather basic $400 MP3 player.

Is that serious? Did they use only Made in the USA equipment to make that video? Their clothes?

The point of the video was that there is no such thing as an “American” product due to all the different layers that go into manufacturing. They stressed that the “Buy American” philosophy is incorrect on it’s face.

Can anyone name an mp3 player that is 100% or even 50% made out of American components?

We buy foreign items because not everything made in the US is good, and not everything is available in the US. WE WANT STUFF. :D

I like how the hick says if you don’t buy american you’re obviously uneducated and ignorant people…….

    srsly?

    it is called globalization…………

I say, tear up those bikinis.

Heh, how short-sighted and divisive. Would’ve made sense if they were smashing Chinese knockoffs of iPods.

Plus, what happens when you buy an iPod? You fill it with music. And if you’re supporting American artists, can they really argue? Wait, I hate rhetorical questions, so I’ll say: no, it’s slop.

We live in a global world. Wreck less, love more.

Real patriots want humans to get along regardless of artificial boundaries. :)

“Can anyone name an mp3 player that is 100% or even 50% made out of American components?”

Not MP3 players but believe it or not, Japanese cars are made in the USA.

Is it just me, or does this video completely contradict itself? They (reason.tv) are the ones who hired the women to smash the iPods, but then at the end of the video, the women appear to have been converted into believing that buying iPods is “good” for America by the very people who hired them. The message I took away is that it’s naive to think anything is truly “made in America,” and that no matter what you buy, it can be “good” for America in the long run if it’s made here, invented here, distributed here, etc. But then, the first three minutes of the video make no sense…

These people are clueless idiots…. not the bikini chicks of course.

I can’t even find underwear locally that’s not made in China.

erm… ok i just watched the video.. and maybe im getting the complete wrong idea on it , but there kinda saying “buy american” is pointless as components for most things are made everywhere, it isnt a devisive video at all , to me it simply points out the pure sillyness of “buy american its patriotic” idea.

Im british.. if we bought only british products i doubt id be on the internet..driving a car.. or just about anything else.. even alot of our food is imported, so lets just keep buying from each other like normal instead of becoming scared protectionist countrys.

ReasonTV needs a new spokes person. Drew uses an iPhone. In fact, he is such a nice guy, when it was first released, he bought some for his friends.

It IS more exotic to buy a Volvo than a Chevy, because the definition of exotic is “being or from or characteristic of another place or part of the world.” Last time I checked, Sweden was not the United States.

thanks for sharing the video, it is very informative if you watch the whole thing… and i see nothing anti-Apple about it.

Well, being a Brit, I feel happy buying iPods now I know that the CPU is UK patented.

The video even starts with the sentence “Why America Shouldn’t ‘Buy American’”, so it’s clear from the beginning what this is all about. Just saying…

Don’t kid yourself. Even the electronics, wiring, guages made by
DELCO are NOT made in america. DELCO was scooped up by
    investors in CHINA.

Americans need to look closer at who owns their businesses and
    their country.

The majority of the T-Bills sold by the US Treasury are currently
held by CHINA and the United Arab Emirates. The US doesn’t
manufacture any technical products on their own soil.

    Be informed.

I know it’s really all about not liking to see iPods getting smashed for the peeps here, but I think the point (and Nicole know this) of the piece was that if we were forced, by law, to “buy American”, we wouldn’t even get to own an iPod. It’s mocking “buy Americanism” as a silly idea and not condemning the iPod. The iPod is a miracle of globalization — off the shelf parts put together using American know how so ALL of us have music out our fingertips now. Or something like that.

Hei Nicole! Mi spiace, ma temo tu sia completamente off-the-track. Questo servizio di ReasonTV non e’ per nulla anti-iPod; al contrario, sostiene che le idee protezioniste del “buy American” sono fesserie. Please, Nicole, have a better look at Reason. Libertarians CANNOT BE FOR THE IDIOTIC IDEA OF “BUY AMERICAN”. And this video is definitely NOT anti-Apple.

Who ever watched the whole video would have noticed that the initial few minutes of the video (where everything was anti-ipod) was mocked by the rest of the video, they were saying that it would be impractical to try to by all-American products, and also that in buying foreign goods you still help the economy in America. They said that although components were made elsewhere 14000 people in the US had jobs dependent on ipods, and that money that is sent in us dollars to foreign banks is only kept so people can exchange their currency for us dollars, to by things in the US (when on holiday for example).

Pity they couldn’t find the proper picture of the UK’s Union Flag. The stripes are all the wrong sizes! :P
