Apple has just confirmed that they are recalling a limited number of Verizon iPad 2s, and now we know the reason why.
As it turns out, an “extremely small number of iPad units for the Verizon 3G network” were flashed with duplicate MEID codes, prompting the recall.
What’s an MEID code? It’s a unique identifier that is used to tell a carrier to send data to your device. Multiple iPad 2s with the same MEID would presumably result in chaos as two or more iPads received and sent conflicting data to the Verizon network, which would view the separate iPads as one device. \
Although Apple wouldn’t actually admit how many devices are being recalled, they will be replacing affected units with new one. If your Verizon iPad 2 is acting wonky and sending you data you don’t need, you might want to just call up your local Apple Store and read them your serial number.

Is it me, or is that an abnormally large iPad in the Verizon guy’s hands?
Yah definitely oversized…I think they photoshoped his hands and the ipad in…
I don’t see the Windows hating Fanboys crowing now.
Were are all the usual bigoted comments?
Please do not call the local Apple Store and read us your serial numbers. Just make a Genius Bar appointment.Â
slight correction. It doesn’t see the two ipads as the same device. If one of them was set up with an account, particularly an active one, the other one wouldn’t be able to sign up. Basically it won’t be seen by the network at all.Â
Looks like some heads will roll at the Foxconn iPad production plant.
what happens if you already purchased the ipad 2? how would you know if it was one of the recalled items?
