AirPlay Mirroring for FaceTime Calls is Available in iOS 5 Beta 3

iOS 5 beta 3 introduced a number of new features that weren’t present in the previous two developer releases, including a selection of new sounds and a handy new ‘AssistiveTouch‘ menu. One thing you may not have stumbled across, however, is AirPlay mirroring for FaceTimes calls on the iPad — allowing you to see your caller bigger than ever before on your HDTV.

As first discovered by TiPb, the feature is described as “fantastic for families and business alike,” and allows a number of people in the same room to view the recipient of your FaceTime call.

Of course, you’ll still need to keep your iPad in front of you because you’ll need to continue to utilize its camera so that your recipient can see you, but this will be great for conference calls and long-distance family reunions.

Have you tried it out yet?

I deleted TIPB from my RSS feeds so I didn’t have to look at Rene Ritchie’s annoying face anymore (which he puts on every post he possibly can); then you go and put it here.  Thanks.

They should introduce a hack to add a wireless webcam mirroring to the system. It would be kind of hard to host airplay mirroring and a conference with a dozen people in the room, with only the iPad camera as the dedicated hoster.

Though I suppose since Lion is gonna be having a FaceTime app, you could use a webcam on a Mac instead. That is if you carried a MacBook to the conference room and a USB webcam.

How come air play mirroring is only available on the iPad.  With Pages/numbers/keynote on the iPhone it is more portable and able to be whipped out a smidge faster, and be slightly more mobile than an iPad.  Yes you do look cool giving a presentation on an ATV holding an iPad but an iPhone is just so more mobile and discreet.
