Now Writers Can Self-Publish to iBooks

If you’re a hopeful author sitting on what you hope to be the next great literary classic — or, failing that, the next mopey emo vampire series that you think will sell like gangbusters amongst the indiscriminate Hot Topic tween market — great news: Apple’s just released information on self-publishing on the iBookstore.

It’s a bit more complicated than just uploading your fan fiction, of course. Basically, you need to have a manuscript in ePub format, a 13-digit ISBN, validate against epubcheck 1.0.5 and contain no unmanifested files, as well as a US Tax ID, a valid iTunes Store account, and an Intel-based Mac running Leopard or higher. But once you’re established, you can start selling your books online, even internationally.

I’ve been really waiting for this: I can’t wait to read the first self-published iBooks blockbuster. Hell, time to head back to Scrivener and try to write one myself.

    Anyone try this yet?
A few months ago I asked the apple store how to do this and they looked at me like i was crazy.
    Glad it’s finally possible.

This is an awesome little cheat-sheet, looks like I don’t have to pay for the app writer software on Apple which is nice. I already have my ISBN’s and the rest, my manuscript is with the final copy editor and I am shooting the final images that illustrate the novel so I look forward to making it to your bookshelf soon! (well, maybe, if you are into my genre that is!).

I have been working on this project for over a year with the intention of publishing an ePub only novel because it is illustrated, and print would cost a fortune. I am so excited to get this finished and see it out there! WOOT!

Looking at that drunk Kennedy on the bookshelf will make any author look elsewhere to publish.

    Yep, link needs adjusting.
But, what about non-US residents? is there another link for the rest of the world?

    Jenn-

It seems that printing a POD book (print on demand) in full color has suddenly become quite cheap, at least on CreateSpace (amazon’s book publishing thing). I just priced a 7×10 full-color 120pg book, and the price (to me as author) was under $17 for a single copy. I’m working on an illustrated how-to art book, so this looks like good news!

It IS possible to self-publish onto Apple’s iBookstore… I have done it with my novel ‘The Dare Ring’, which is accessible through the iBooks app on all iPads and iPhones. I’m based in the UK, so it is possible here too.

It wasn’t all that easy – creating the epub book is non trivial as none of the free conversion tools did exactly what was needed. But it can be done.

If you like thrillers or Fight Club, check out The Dare Ring by Titus Powell! Only $2.49 and I guarantee it’ll be the most gripping novel you have ever read!
