Apple’s iMac is 25 Percent of Desktop Growth in 2010

The global PC market can thank Apple’s iMac for being the main reason desktop computer sales have pulled out of a two-year nosedive, an analyst said Wednesday. The popular Apple all-in-one computer accounted for 25 percent of all desktop growth in 2010.

Although notebooks and netbooks account for more than 90 percent of global PC growth, desktops now appear “like they’ve stopped eroding and can resume at least some low single-digit recovery after two years of decline, driven by emerging markets, corporate workhorse use and power gamers,” Caris & Company analyst Robert Cihra writes.

“But believe it or not, we estimate Apple’s iMac accounting for a full 1/4 of ALL desktop market growth in calendar year 2010,” he adds.

The worldwide desktop growth had already appeared in the microcosm of Apple consumers. After the introduction of the 21- and 27- inch iMacs, desktop Mac sales jumped 74 percent. The Cupertino, Calif. based company in December reported a 57 percent jump in desktop sales, or 70 percent when compared to the previous year.

1) Apples are already the best selling desktop brand, so they should lead the segment.
2) Remember how we all used to crave “portable desktop” notebooks? Now we all crave “desktop notebooks.” Which is what the iMac is. Quick! What does a Dell desktop look like? It’s a black box with a corded keyboard, corded mouse, corded speakers, corded monitor. The other manufacturers all-in-ones are little more than cheap black plastic displays while the iMac looks like a high-end appliance.
3) The display. Even with the horrible quality problems of the 27-inch models, they can’t keep them in stock. because nobody can touch the Apple displays.

The new 27″ iMac is the best desk top I have used: value, speed, monitor, looks. It is so far ahead of the competition.
