Leander Kahney is the editor and publisher of Cult of Mac.
Leander is a longtime technology reporter and the author of six acclaimed books about Apple, including two New York Times bestsellers: Jony Ive: The Genius Behind Apple’s Greatest Products and Inside Steve’s Brain, a biography of Steve Jobs.
He’s also written a top-selling biography of Apple CEO Tim Cook and authored Cult of Mac and Cult of iPod, which both won prestigious design awards. Most recently, he was co-author of Cult of Mac, 2nd Edition.
Leander has been reporting about Apple and technology for nearly 30 years.
Before founding Cult of Mac as an independent publication, Leander was news editor at Wired.com, where he was responsible for the day-to-day running of the Wired.com website. He headed up a team of six section editors, a dozen reporters and a large pool of freelancers. Together the team produced a daily digest of stories about the impact of science and technology, and won several awards, including several Webby Awards, 2X Knight-Batten Awards for Innovation in Journalism and the 2010 MIN (Magazine Industry Newsletter) award for best blog, among others.
Before being promoted to news editor, Leander was Wired.com’s senior reporter, primarily covering Apple. During that time, Leander published a ton of scoops, including the first in-depth report about the development of the iPod. Leander attended almost every keynote speech and special product launch presented by Steve Jobs, including the historic launches of the iPhone and iPad. He also reported from almost every Macworld Expo in the late ’90s and early ‘2000s, including, sadly, the last shows in Boston, San Francisco and Tokyo. His reporting for Wired.com formed the basis of the first Cult of Mac book, and subsequently this website.
Before joining Wired, Leander was a senior reporter at the legendary MacWeek, the storied and long-running weekly that documented Apple and its community in the 1980s and ’90s.
Leander has written for Wired magazine (including the Issue 16.04 cover story about Steve Jobs’ leadership at Apple, entitled Evil/Genius), Scientific American, The Guardian, The Observer, The San Francisco Chronicle and many other publications.
Leander has a postgrad diploma in artificial intelligence from the University of Aberdeen, and a BSc (Hons) in experimental psychology from the University of Sussex.
He has a diploma in journalism from the UK’s National Council for the Training of Journalists.
Leander lives in San Francisco, California, and is married with four children. He’s an avid biker and has ridden in many long-distance bike events, including California’s legendary Death Ride.

Is that a picture of it as the featured image?
Sort of. It’s a mockup.
Congratulations! Looking forward to the unveiling of the new look!
~ a daily reader
Thanks! Hope you like it!
I was wondering what was going on with the redesign. A few cult casts ago you mentioned the new look and yet there has been nothing. Looking forward to the new look.
It’s been a bit of a slog but we are finally there!
Congratulations! Good to hear that we are getting a new look. It was CultOfMac and The CultCast what encouraged me to make my own Apple News Website and I still am a daily reader. Greetings from Mexico. :)
Thanks! What’s your website?
can you like fmac < www.NetCash9.Com
Why don’t you guys do it in a different color and layout scheme. May be to more align with current Apple site with dark grey/ green or some other color than blue.
No offense. But this seriously almost look like iMore! Even if you guys are affiliated (?) it’s good to have an independent presence.
Cheers!
No offense to you, but how are you able to vent your opinion with such little details in a screenshot? You have no idea how it will work, what it will look like in total, what it will look like on mobile devices. What the technical back-end will offer on functionality and how users will interact with it.
Or did you beta test it? In that case, you might have a point. But for now it’s still an opinion based on basically nothing.
I’m looking forward and already love the typography!
Good luck guys!
Thanks!
Not affiliated. Little late to change the color scheme but there will be more tweaks once we get the basic site refreshed.
finally
No kidding.
hopefully the web site will be faster than it is now
That’s the plan. Please let us know your experiences once the new site goes live.
Please just keep up the great content. No intrusive adverts or videos that start auto-yakking from whiney estuarian voices that have never had media training (yes I mean you, Macworld).
Oh, and no bloody cats.
Ads will be part of the mix — they have to be since we’re a free publication. The auto-start videos are *never* supposed to happen, but third-party advertisements can be tricky (sorry when that happens — let us know and we will fix ASAP).
P.S. No promises about cats, although we won’t post any bleeding felines.
Can you please define “estuarian” as a dictionary lookup brings up no results. Thanks.
We’re excited too. Hope you like the redesign once it’s launched.
Is that why your site is so slow & can take several minutes to open this week?
I’ll easily forgive any hiccups that occur as long as we get a CultCast of everybody laughing at the troubles. I’m sure it’ll be fine.
Yes can’t wait for the new look, I’ve been a mac user since 2008, and an iPhone owner since the 4 and , if I get the new 5K iMac I’m looking to do a podcast or youtube , and it would be because you guys inspired me to along with a few other people .
congrats! i look forward to ned design and functionality..
I shouldn’t be this pumped about the unveiling of a new website.
Who am I kidding. Only at CultOfMac.
Next Monday?
Excited :)
looking forward to that , Thank you :)
Its Monday
Yep, and still no change that I can perceive. Maybe it’s not quite ready for prime time.
It’s Monday morning, looks the same to me.
Hoping that switch gets flipped soon, I was hoping to see the new look when I got to work today
It is FAST! So far so much better.
WOW! Nice redesign job CoM!!! I’ve seen so many horrendous redesigns that ended up much worse than the “befores”, but you guys have done a great job! I love the headlines in Museo and the larger article images. Overall the site is more legible and readable. I LOVE it!
Just wanted to mention that it is much easier for casual readers to navigate the new design. It was always a bit weird visiting the old site because the archives “looped” a bit. You would go through the most recent postings, and then you had to *again* view the most recent postings in order to access the archives. Glad to see you’ve fixed this!
Looks good!
