Twitter’s response to Apple Music reads like a eulogy for Spotify

Two minutes after Apple Music launched Tuesday, Hans Metzke was listening to it on his device. He hit pause on his excitement to send out this Tweet: “And we’re live! Awesome! Bye Spotify.”

Apple Music users immediately took to social media to sing the praises of Apple’s new music streaming service. At the same time, many were saying farewell to music streaming’s current king, Spotify.

Whether Apple Music, which is currently free for the three months, will usurp Spotify or the other big player, Pandora, remains to be seen.

Spotify had a smattering of supporters on Twitter and one cautious bird, Saurav Pandey, seemed frustrated by the hype. “Why is tech media acting as if there was no streaming music service before today?”

But several on Twitter were like Metzke, quickly dismissing Spotify as they went deep into Apple Music. It didn’t matter whether you searched on #AppleMusic or #Spotify – obituaries were being written.

Here is a sampling of Tweets declaring the body already cold:

Spotify had support on Twitter during the first hour of life for Apple Music even if the writers’ defense of it was drowned out by the excitement over Apple Music.

2 reasons I will stick with Spotify:
    – Its integrated with my car’s radio display so I don’t need to fumble with my phone while driving.
    – It works with Sonos.

I love Beats 1 and the streaming angle which means it’ll hurt Spotify. It’s radio functionality needs tweaking. My old iTunes channels are now under recently listened to which I don’t like, i’d have preferred to have my channels “featured”.

Is there a way to see ALL of your old radio stations? I feel like they need to have some sort of tutorial; I can’t sit through that awful keynote presentation again.

If you look under Beats 1 there is a recently played list. Click that and all mine were there. I hope they fix this I would like my channels under Featured.

Apple definitely has some work to do. Listening to a playlist and want to jump to an album/artist? Can’t do it. Playlist additions also haven’t been adding correctly. Hopefully, those are early patch issues.

Other than those small issues, looks great and haven’t had any playback issues. Overall it is going to be a great alternative service to feature rich market…

The moment Apple announced Apple Music I was already preparing to convert my playlists if for no other reason than the price.

I’m currently paying $15 for myself and my wife for Spotify but now I can pay that same price and my daughters can have it too.

Beats 1 Radio is truly next level and is offering something that Spotify, Rdio and Google Play Music can’t match: live DJs offering exclusive tracks and interviews. And having Elton John, Pharrell, Dr. Dre, Ellie Goulding and others host their own shows is a huge differentiator from not just any streaming service but radio in general.

I’ve had a few hiccups — like Beats 1 just cutting out — but I blame that on first day jitters. The only glaring omission I see is the option to toggle explicit songs on radio stations. Obviously the hosted shows like Beats 1 play the clean version of tracks but when you launch into another radio station or create one there’s no way to toggle explicit tracks. Have to believe they’ll re-add that in.

Otherwise I’m set with Apple Music. Spotify will see another cancelation coming their way in the next day or so.

After trying Apple Music for a few good hours here’s what I like:
    – Slightly bigger library compared to Spotify
    – Play history is in the Queue (Just swipe down from the list).

That’s it. Beats1 Radio is nothing revolutionary. Connect is also a big meh. I imagine the only people who will use this feature are the same people who spends time managing fanpages and arguing with other artist’s fans.

One thing that I really disliked is the UI. I expected better from a company that makes intuitive and easy UI. Apple Music is like a combination of iTunes Store and Game Center. Ugh.

I’m really disappointed by the way Apple Music works. I thought I’d still go to the iTunes Store and look up music and select from there whether I want to buy or add to my Music and stream from there. I’ve made two accidental purchases as soon as I went on it. Why are they doing it like this…? It’s so un-Apple like… and it’s definitely not part of the “it just works” philosophy…

Also, not everything in the iTunes store is also available to stream and save in Music which is what they’ve been shouting about for a while now, well at least I got that impression… but everything I can’t stream on Spotify is also missing from Apple Music – althought it IS available on the iTunes store… Perhaps streaming is not the future after all… but I think Spotify has nothing to worry about.

I just go to all the forums you go to it seems…
a good point is a good point. There are slight edits in each by the way …

    Everyone keeps doing this

    iPhone killer this
    Android vs iOS
    Blah blah blah

There’s so many millions of people that are not customers of spotify and pandora, if anything they might get a little boost in the short to medium term but you can’t deny the industry has had a shake up.
