Based on the highly acclaimed novel of the same name, The Martian will chronicle astronaut Mark Watney’s incredibly plausible scientific survival on the surface of Mars for four years in a habitat designed for 30 days.

With Matt Damon in the title role, an all-star cast and Ridley Scott in the director’s chair, The Martian is shaping up to be the one film science nerds must see this summer.

The official trailer came out Monday and you’re going to want to see it right now. Too bad you’ll have to wait until the end of November.

The official YouTube channel has the following to say to whet your appetite.

During a manned mission to Mars, Astronaut Mark Watney (Matt Damon) is presumed dead after a fierce storm and left behind by his crew. But Watney has survived and finds himself stranded and alone on the hostile planet. With only meager supplies, he must draw upon his ingenuity, wit and spirit to subsist and find a way to signal to Earth that he is alive. Millions of miles away, NASA and a team of international scientists work tirelessly to bring “the Martian” home, while his crewmates concurrently plot a daring, if not impossible rescue mission. As these stories of incredible bravery unfold, the world comes together to root for Watney’s safe return. Based on a best-selling novel, and helmed by master director Ridley Scott, THE MARTIAN features a star studded cast that includes Jessica Chastain, Kristen Wiig, Kate Mara, Michael Peña, Jeff Daniels, Chiwetel Ejiofor, and Donald Glover.

Even better, perhaps, is this faux-documentary trailer released this past Sunday, in which we see the astronauts in a “behind the scenes” kind of video you might see if this were a real mission:

  1. It might just look like Ridley Scott might redeem himself for that cluster fsck that was his last movie.

Cool. What’s **next year’s** Jessica Chastain / Matt Damon “stranded in space” movie going to be??

  3. Richard Liu says:

The novel is remarkably spectacular and recommend to everyone. But I wonder what will be left when they’re trying to squeeze the content into an 120 min film.
