Up, up and away! First Supergirl trailer has us cautiously optimistic

It’s not a bird. It’s not a plane. It’s not a man. It’s Supergirl.

Seeing Kara Zor-El finally embrace her amazing Kryptonian powers in this trailer for the upcoming CBS television series Supergirl is an eye-welling moment of pure awesomeness for men and women alike who appreciate the Super myths from DC Comics.

Watching her bumble her way through cheesy, flirty moments as the gopher for media conglomerate owner Cat Grant (played by Calista Flockhart) and giggling through her scenes with beefcake James Olson, however, is a cheesiness that rivals some of the worst of Smallville, so color us warily excited. Check out the trailer and make up your own mind.

See what we mean? I’m the most unabashed Superman fan I know, so I find the moments with Kara in her super-suit, saving the jet plane, and learning about her cousin, Superman, to be squee-worthy scenes that I’ll be sitting through breathlessly when they finally air this summer.

I do hope, however, that the powers that be will keep the twee hipster soundtrack and bumbling Kara from the first few minutes of this trailer to a minimum, and create a true superhero television show that isn’t just “Superman for girls,” because that can get all kinds of annoying (girls like all kinds of things!)

We’ll see this fall when CBS launches the new show, which stars Melissa Benoist (Glee, Whiplash) in the title role and is based on a DC Comics character created in 1959 by Otto Binder and Al Plastino.
