We all know that teens are crazy drivers. But when you put phones in their hands, things get really bad.

AAA conducted video analysis of teenagers on the road and discovered that “distraction was a factor in nearly six out of 10 moderate-to-severe teen crashes.”

The video footage speaks for itself, so just watch:

I am sorry but these stories drive me bananas. Everything is a distraction to a human driver. Radio = distraction, passanger = distraction, thinking about the day = distraction, dog in your lap = distraction, smoking = distraction, makeup = distraction. Here in Phoenix something on the side of the road = distraction. There will always be something distracting a driver as long as we are driving.

Answer…take out the human factor. Come on cars start driving for us.

Do the same test with most people same results.

Drivers should be trained better to drive from the start.

Yes, but they’re not all the same distraction. I can talk to a passenger without looking away from the road. I can eat a sandwich without looking away for more than a second. Radio is a couple of seconds, so I only interact with that when the road is clear. Sitting there texting is insane – these guys are missing 100’s of yards of road.

So, yeah, there’ll always be distractions, but to react by claiming that automated cars are the answer when we’ve never seen them used in any numbers is hysterical.

Thanks for being a great driver. They are all the same because it only takes one second for someone to take their eyes of the road to cause an accident. In the video some one was not even on the phone just talking to the passenger and another one spun out because it was raining. I do the same thing you do make sure I have time to take my eyes off the road.

You can train someone not to be stupid.

People who text and drive (and drink…) are risking other people’s lives too, which is why I get so damn angry. Don’t risk my life because you want to read/send a text or because you’re too stupid to know your limits.

  4. Forgive the ignorance on my part but, why are there dashcams in these cars in the first place which record both the driver and the road ahead? I’ve seen these in cars in Russia where they are front-facing for insurance purposes, but why are these installed in these cars in the first place? Or is that more common in ‘murica than here in Canada?

Is it me or do most of these drivers reaction is that of familiarity? The night texters especially look unfazed.

  6. JB says:

The problem is clearly the poor music choices to which these teens are listening.

  7. CrossWired says:

I’m all for guiding and nurturing, but these brats are a menace to others on the road. I’d push for massive fines, cancelling their license, jacking up their insurance 10x and blackballing them for a few years. We see far too many text-n-drive teenagers menacing the roads, and it’s getting worse.

Driving at night is challenging enough, the radio makes it more distracting, and texting on the phone is the last thing we need.

I think kids are dumber today than when I was a kid. It seems like we’re not empowering them to be able to deal with things with any amount of common sense.
