Analyst: MacBook Pro Refresh in March or April

When or if Apple will unveil a refreshed MacBook Pro line is the latest parlor game among Apple owners. Along with watching for unreleased Intel procesors and checking Best Buy’s inventory, fans may have to wait until March or April for a new MacBook Pro, one analyst is suggesting.

A new MacBook Pro could be unveiled in late March, the end of the current quarter, or in April, when the next quarter begins, says Kaufman Brothers analyst Shaw Wu. Wu bases his claim on low inventories of the MacBook.

Although the exact timing of a refresh is not certain, Apple does need to “refresh” the product. “We believe further differentiation beyond the aluminum casing, SD slot and FireWire can helpp the MacBook Pro preserve its premium price,” Wu told clients Thursday morning. Apple last updated the MacBook Pro in June 2009.

Reports suggest the refresh could include Intel’s Core i7 M processor.

I can’t wait to see the new MBP, but what I’m really anxious for is an update of the Mac Pro, hopefully with the i9. Anyone have an idea as to when they’ll refresh the big boy?

  • eroast

It’s fascinating that this “analyst” is being paid to predict such a thing.

He probably just checked Macrumours’ buyer’s guide.

Also, the same Macrumours forum has a “waiting for arrandale” thread with roughly 3 gazillion posts.

  • Jonny

You’ve manage to contribute no fact or even opinion in this article.

We’re to take from this post that it probably will happen soon and that the refresh will involve a “refresh”…

    Thanks.

  • blah

Apple doesn’t need to “refresh” the product?

Are you serious? The MBPs are way over-priced and way behind PCs at the moment.

  • John

This is so hopeless. Why would anyone claim to know Apple’s refresh products? In the beginning of the year, many thought that it would be presented at the Apple conference in Jan. 27. It didn’t. So move on. Many speculated to be in February with few leaks from false promotional ads and Best Buy inventory. These speculators are bunch of rejects that don’t know what they’re talking about. Please, get it right. Only Steve Jobs know.

If you like speculation, here’s one. This hopeless article claims that the new refresh will come out in March or April. IT’S NOT GOING TO HAPPEN. THAT’S MY SPECULATION!

HERE’S ANOTHER ONE. When there’s no refresh in March or April, another idiot will claim that there will be Refresh in May or June.

Steve Jobs, what’s taking so long. Why do you let these speculators act so stupid? You recently commented that Adobe Inc. are “lazy”. You are one lazy hypocrite! FYI, your new iPad will suck. Have you learned anything from “Newton”? Just stick with your originals.

What about the MAC PRO tower?

That is over a year since the last refresh. I want one.

Wu doesn’t have the best track record., and he’s clearly not thinking this one out.

let’s assume he’s right about the fact that laptop stock and delivery is low. He says it’s because they are about to upgrade.

I say no. Any upgrade would be mid May to June. Just before the whole Back to School thing.

So why, do I say, stock is low right now. How about because

this is a low time for buying laptops since folks know they upgrade them in June last year and they will likely do the BTS sale this year to catch the influx of new college freshers. So folks are waiting. Knowing this, why flood your stores with tons of stock

Also, Apple has already announced two new products, one for March and one for April and could be devoting resources to production since they hope both releases will be huge. Just because we haven’t see confirmation of FCC approval, doesn’t mean it didn’t happen already.

In addition, Apple releasing new laptops in the midst of the ipad would cause chaos in their stores. They will want staff focusing on pushing the ipad because like with book bestsellers, high unit sales will encourage more sales (not to mention stock prices). So they release and let the first waves pass by and then surge up again with new laptops and the back to school (which I predict will be a free ipod touch again but you can use the rebate value against a new classic, nano or ipad)

MacBook Pro’s will surely be unvelied in April, not to damage iPad release momentum.

I think Apple is stuck in terms of chipsets. The new arrandale/clarkdale IGP is a lot better than previous IGPs from intel, but probably isn’t all that better than the nvidia 9400m that they currently use. So that would mean stagnant graphics performance for the lower half of the lineup. There aren’t any other chipsets that work with these processors at this point – ie no nvidia chipset option. I suppose they could give up on the IGP on even the low end and go for a low power mobile GPU such as a 5000 series ATI chip. If their mobile chips are as power frugal as the desktop 5000 series, it could work well. But since the Core i3/5 Clarkdale/arrandale GPU is on chip, you have wasted silicon. They could probably disable the GPU in the BIOS/EFI so that its not robbing power since its not used, but I suspect the ATI card would still use more power than an equivlient performing on chip GPU.

Shaw Wu is a retard of the highest caliber. Don’t believe me?

He has worse record than coin flips. Now he’s just trying to score some “Captain Obvious” points and pass it as his own research. Everyone knows that Macbook Pro refresh is on the horizon. Blogs have been talking about it since December 2009. In fact the tight inventory has been cited at least 3 times in the news before this. I really don’t understand why Kaufman Brothers just doesn’t fire this moron.

  • Mekon

I cannot say how I know, but I have very good reason to believe the new MBP available in early May 2010, will sport the new OLED display among other crafty and spine-tingling features.

    You have been informed.

  • singh

I dont care about this new macbook pros, i brouth one today

  • otto hogfather

Ya know, I’ve never had a mac and just about committed to buying one, but now I find out they have all these hardware problems (a $350 warranty that’s NEEDED?) and there’s some huge secret about letting your customers know when you’re going to release your product. Whatever. Steve Jobs must be a real D-bag and probably sits at home and touches himself while reading the macrumors forums. I’m going to go buy a Dell and be happy with the latest technology at half the price.

  • Mekon

Go with the Dell my friend HAHAHAHA!!!!! You will suffer!

  • John

Rumor says Mac Pro is March 16. We’ll find out very soon.

I think MacBook Pro is very soon and should sport an i7 processor.

iPad is available April 3rd but you can pre-order this Friday.

  • Robert

Quote: “Go with the Dell my friend HAHAHAHA!!!!! You will suffer!”

    Mekon… ???

I own 2 laptops running Leopard.. one is a early 2008 MBP.. the other is a Dell….. Can you guess which one had to be repaired due to hardware failure ?

It’s pretty stupid when a hackintosh that cost me 1/3 the money is more reliable

Heck… a friggin netbook has a useless SD card slot… just like the 2009 MBPs

I hope the refresh is good, otherwise I’m done.. I need a real pro laptop I can travel with…. not a fashion toy.

Screw the macbook pro. Bluray is 4 years old and its still does not have this potion. Why? Because Apple would rather you buy the movie on iTunes and see’s Blurays as a competitor. Same reason they don’t have flash for their iPad is so that you can go buy software just to watch movies thu CNN.com. I’m done with Apple. I have 3 brothers. One has a macbook pro, the other a macbook and the other a macbook air all circa 2009 and they all run thir laptops on top of usb cooler. Their designs are flawed oh yeah but its shiny though. And oh yes, I see 14 year old girls with these laptops and one poster in here was right we need real laptops.
