Apple forces GoodReader to pull some iCloud Drive functionality from app

GoodReader is a popular document reader app that can view or read pretty much every type of document under the sun. The latest update to the app makes it more powerful than ever, introducing a new Speak feature that can basically turn any PDF or TXT file into an audiobook.

But it also just got a little worse: the latest update to GoodReader has dropped certain iCloud Drive functionality to prevent being pulled from the App Store. And, as usual, the issue has to do with Apple’s complete opacity when it comes to what is and isn’t allowed with iCloud Drive.

Here’s how Good.iWare, GoodReader’s developers, explain the issue:

To ensure the compliance to Apple’s iCloud usage policy, the following operations have been disabled: creation of new folders inside iCloud, deletion of folders inside iCloud, moving of files and folders inside iCloud. We apologize for the inconvenience, but the iCloud usage policy is mandatory.

Those who have been paying attention to the app developer scene in the previous month might recall that this sounds very similar to a problem encountered by Panic’s Transmit file transfer. In that case, Apple demanded the removal of the app’s “Send to iCloud Drive” capability, but later allowed the app back in, in what appeared to be an arbitrary reversal of decision.

Could GoodReader have the same luck Transmit had? Might Apple repent of its decision and let the iCloud Drive functionality back in? Time will tell.

GoodReader is available from the iTunes App Store for $4.99.
