Will the iPhone look like this by 2017? Photo: Steel Drake/Behance

Pre-orders for the iPhone 6 began just over two months ago, but I’m already looking forward to shelling out cash for the iPhone 8 now that Steel Drake published this glass unibody iPhone concept.

The design keeps its familiar form factor but wraps the bottom and top edges with a glass display. Given Apple’s success rate with Sapphire glass, making this thing might not be conceivable until 2018, but there’s still plenty of time for Jony to make it happen. The designer decided to swap out the rear aluminum shell with a stiffening plate on the sides. The finished look is simple, a little curvy, and drop dead gorgeous.

Check it out:

Steel Drake’s concept looks like something Apple could possibly make, but there are a few things I’d change if I could.

Likes: Curved glass edges that drape over the top and bottom of the phone. Keeps the same iconic iPhone form factor. Camera lens could use an upgrade by now, but at least it’s not protruding. No more ugly antenna lines.

No Like: Glass doesn’t transition as seamlessly to the metal as the iPhone 6. Put the power button in the middle. 3.5mm headphone jack? Rumor is Jony wants to go with 2.5mm. Make the bezels slimmer so I can hold it easier.

It’d look great in white too:

Needs two cameras on the back for stereo vision

      3D vision

        Stereo Vision
3D is really not a very accurate term even though it’s used widely in the movie business, it’s all marketing. Stereo Vision implies two images, one for each eye where as 3D would imply an ability to see your images in three dimensions where you could move around the scene and choose your POV, you don’t get that, you get one image for each eye from two POVs, stereo, just like stereo audio gives you two channels of audio.

Where do you store the stylus?

Looks cool but I’m pretty sure it would shatter the glass the first time you dropped it.

Just give me water proof and a battery that will last for 3 or 4 days.

In order to be waterproof, you have those annoying little covers for the areas that have holes. A friend of mine has a Sony that’s water proof, while it’s waterproof, you have to deal with those plastic covers. Unfortunately, it’s a little annoying to have to constantly deal with removing them and then putting them back in.

My only problem is with the button, I know it is for touch id. But by then maybe we can go away from having a button at all, it is akin to the click wheel from the Classic Ipod. They could still put the sensor under the glass and do a light effect like Macbooks and haptics (future-ultrahaptics). And react (light up) to wave or movement gestures. This would give screen full real estate of the phone a true edge to edge design and eliminate bezels stilling screen space. My biggest complaint of the 6+ is the screen size. It should have been bigger for the size of the phone. There to much real estate used for bezels around the phone, it is really noticable on the white editions. But with that said, it is a great design concept.

It would be cool if the screen was able to take fingerprint ID either anywhere on the screen and not have that home button. Apple does need to slim up the product as there is a lot of wasted space on top and bottom. I do like HTC’s design, especially because they have two speakers built in, I just wish Apple had a similar design that had more rounded sides.

  9. ChrisC says:

It looks too thick (proportions are out), the iphone 6 is thinner than this already, it should be thinner and lighter than previous generations.

  10. Atheist says:

But can it bend like 6 plus? :xP Sorry couldn’t resist

Hold the 2nd position in the line for me :)
