After announcing new iPads and Macs today, Apple has unleashed OS X Yosemite on the world as a free download in the Mac App Store. Yosemite is a major upgrade to OS X that’s been in developer and public beta for the past several months.

“OS X Yosemite is the most advanced version of OS X we’ve ever built, with a brand new design, amazing Continuity features and powerful versions of the apps you use every day,” said Craig Federighi, Apple’s senior vice president of Software Engineering, in a statement. “OS X Yosemite ushers in the future of computing, where your Apple devices all work together seamlessly and magically. It’s something only Apple can do, and it’s available today.”

Before you install Yosemite, make sure your Mac is supported.

Here’s Apple’s official compatibility list:

  • iMac (Mid-2007 or later)
  • MacBook (13-inch Aluminum, Late 2008), (13-inch, Early 2009 or later)
  • MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid-2009 or later), (15-inch, Mid/Late 2007 or later), (17-inch, Late 2007 or later)
  • MacBook Air (Late 2008 or later)
  • Mac Mini (Early 2009 or later)
  • Mac Pro (Early 2008 or later)
  • Xserve (Early 2009)

If you’re on one of the Macs listed above, then head on over to the Mac App Store and start downloading! Make sure you have at least one backup just in case something goes wrong, but Apple’s installer is pretty straightforward and should leave all of your data untouched.

New releases in the App Store can take a little while to propagate in different areas, so if you’re not seeing Yosemite now, check again in a few minutes.

We have plenty of more coverage for Yosemite coming, so stay tuned.

Not! When you try to download it you get a wonderful error that it’s not available.

I live in the UK and it’s telling me that the item is not available in the UK! #disappointment

You will need 5.1 GB of space for new OS. Additional 848 MBs is required for voice recognition function alone. With that in mind. I am almost done installing the OS and updates on my MBPr. Under an hour altogether.

So much for that billion dollar server & infrastructure upgrade Apple boasted about, saying it’d make everyone upgrading to Yosemite and iOS 8 be able to do so super quick and without issues Apple’s previously had with update releases.

Anyone know of a way turn off the MacBook Pro screen with the lid open on OS X 10.10 Yosemite while using an external monitor?

Now it seems this trick no longer works. After following these steps again the screen on my Macbook Pro now turns on after logging in and opening the clam shell.

    http://gizmodo.com/5938452/a-trick-to-make-using-an-external-monitor-with-your-m acbook-way-better

    To execute in Terminal:

    sudo nvram boot-args=”iog=0x0″

    To undo in Terminal:

    sudo nvram -d boot-args

Once you type it into terminal I believe you need to enter your password. I then restart my machine. Now the TRICK is to either restart your machine with the lid already closed (hit restart then slam the lid!) OR turn the machine on for the first time (then quickly slam the lid!) once you are past the login screen you can open the lid.

It’s like falling in love with my Mac all over again!! Handoff feels like something that should’ve been there all along and making/taking calls on my iMac is absolutely insane!! Love it, love it, love it!!!

OS 10.9 Mavericks broke several of my device drivers, which put my recording studio out of commission for a couple of months – the Lexicon driver for my FW810s being the main headache – so I’m going to wait this time until I’m sure the new driver (Still in beta!) will continue to function.

I await the experiences of the early adopters. I’ll give it a couple of weeks for the inevitable big fixes and whining about “my (device) is broken” to come and go first.

But it’s been in beta for so long already!! I love it, it’s so beautiful. I’m falling in love all over again. It installed in just under half an hour after downloading the 5.1g OS.
