Apple has begun contacting developers to tell them that it’s time to submit their apps for OS X Yosemite ahead of its public release later this fall. The email encourages the use of new Yosemite functions like app extensions — as well as Swift, Apple’s “innovative” new programming language.

“Make sure your apps take advantage of all the great new features in OS X Yosemite, which will be available to millions of customers around the world later this fall,” the Cupertino company says.

Ensuring their apps are ready for Yosemite on day one can be hugely beneficial to OS X developers. Not only does it give users who update straight away a smooth and stable experience, but early support for Apple’s latest OS can also boost downloads — particularly if Apple decides to feature their app.

Apple’s message comes just after it rolled out its Yosemite GM candidate and Xcode 6.1 GM seed for registered developers. We still don’t have a public release date for Yosemite just yet, but Apple is still promising a launch later this fall. When it arrives, Yosemite will be a free download via the Mac App Store for all users who have a compatible Mac.
