OS X Yosemite Public Beta 3 and Developer Preview 8 are now available

By

Yosemite

Apple has made the third public preview of its upcoming OS X Yosemite operating system available to the one million beta testers via its AppleSeed program.

OS X Yosemite Preview 8 Build 14A361c has also been seeded to developers and is available for download in the Mac App Store or from the Mac Dev Center along with a new version of Xxode 6.1 beta 2 and Apple Configurator 1.7 beta 6.

Apple’s note to developers doesn’t mention the addition of new features, but does state that SMS Continuity has been removed from testing, but it will be available again in October via a free update to iOS 8. The note also states that only iPhoto 9.5.1 and Aperture 3.5.1 will run on OS X Yosemite Preview 8. We’ll update you with any new features we find once we get the new preview installed.

Not surprised they’re having issues with SMS Continuity. Sending/Syncing SMS messages between a computer and mobile device is something that third-party Android services like Mighty Text are struggling to get right.

Don’t think they were having many issues before they removed it.. Worked OK for me anyway. I think this is mostly to keep that feature off the shelf until Yosemite is released with new hardware in October.

Then they can tout it again during the event. It’s a marketing move IMHO. No point to show it off with just iPads, you want to let people know MacBooks can do it too; all at once!! Remember, it’s an iPad event too.

As far as my testing has gone, there haven’t been any problems with continuity since developer beta 2. Honestly, I’ve come to love it on my dev machine, and don’t really want to lose it, even for a month.

Me too, never sound issues with it. I sold my iPhone 5S today waiting for my iPhone 6. As soon as I logged out of my iCloud account I instantly lost all messages via my phone number. I can’t wait for it to get back on. I got so use to getting calls and sms via my mac.

Honestly, it worked beautifully 100% of the time. It was pretty well-tested, it worked great, and it was a feature that nobody actually needed to build or update software for the new OS, so I imagine they removed it so that they could do the backend work necessary without service interruptions that might lead to negative press pre-release.

The problem at hand is not even that complex, to be honest.

I’m really sad it’s gone now, lol.

    • Kr00 says:

It’s been removed as ios 8 is released this week and continuity is meant for Yosemite, which is being released next month. Testing from my perspective has been fine here.

It’s just a BETA right now but what you shouldn’t be surprised is that IT will make Android look like eating its own poop so just chill out and wait for the final, comprehensive and fully integrated Handoff functionality ;-)

    almost installed here. Hackintosh style.

    • justme says:

      how you do that!?.
      I’m tying to install mavericks.
      via unbeast? or how?
      please let me know :D

      • Lucas Larini Kidricki says:

no tonys tools. never. i use clover as bootloader and installed from dp1 and being updating without problems since then. all patches and kexts on the fly. no need to modify anything from update to update.

the installation is via usb stick using an untouched copy of yosemite and following the guides from insanelymac. forget about tonycrap if you want to be always up to date and with full support.

      • PMB01 says:

        Wow, I didn’t know tonymacx86 haters existed.

You should chill out. His site is THE resource for the Hackintosh community!

      • Lucas Larini Kidricki says:

Are you kidding me, zombie? Not one single tool or kext is his creation, The forum is totally blocked for hw they don´t sell. Please, take a read and don´t spread bullcrap:

        http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/278907-permanently-banned-from-tonymacx86/

There is many more, but start with these if you want to know about who is who in the osx86 scene.
        Good reading.

      • Lucas Larini Kidricki says:

Sorry, i´ve tried to point you some links to spare you the work as it exposes tonys fraudulent methods but appears that was not aproved. His site is far away from be the resource. Are you kidding me? Unibeast is myhack 1.1, Chimera is chameleon, Multibeast is a bad tool that compile others work.
If you keep thinking this wrong, be afraid, because you are a Zombie and to let you know, if Project osx, voodooprojects and insanelymac were shutdown, the hackintosh community would be DEAD. He does noob friendly tools based on others work. Its embarrassing what his lack of honesty did it already. Not long ago, he didn´t gave credit to the developers of filenvram, which enables facetime, imessage and others, and was forced to remove it from his chameleon wannabe bootloader.
I hope you use this great tool called google and find some really sad things from your “resource” who does not develop a single thing.
Try “tonymac seriously”, why we don´t support tonymac” for example.

      • PMB01 says:

Neither of my three sentences claimed he developed anything. Calm your tits. To dismiss his influence on the Hackintosh community is just plain ignorant on your part.

      • Lucas Larini Kidricki says:

Influence? lol. And you said he was THE resource. Come on.
        Well, I did my job.
        Good luck.

      • PMB01 says:

Oh, you trying to make yourself look like an asshole?
        Good job with that, indeed!

      • Lucas Larini Kidricki says:

        Ok. Good luck, Mate.

  5. Fredster says:

I wonder how Apple will release iOS 8 this Thursday, but Yosemite later? It creates a problem as you cannot activate iCloud Drive in all of your devices at the same time. I hope they don’t take too long to release 10.10 :(

    • Kr00 says:

iCloud Drive compatibility will be functional with the release of Yosemite, as it’s the main platform for the service. You won’t need to wait long, Yosemite is very stable and will likely be realised mid October.

  6. Kr00 says:

Wonder when the new Photo app gets a run with developers?
