OfficePOD: The Ultimate Mac Accessory

20100122-pod1.jpg

Behold! The OfficePOD!

The OfficePOD gives you just over 4 square metres of space to swivel your chair and tap on your Mac keyboard. It comes with LED lighting, secure locks, and an electrical connection to your home. All you need to do is move yourself and your Mac inside, and you’re ready to work!

But what else does it have going for it?

Well, say the Officepodders, it gives you a whole new room to add to your house. It saves you hours of time commuting. And it’s environmentally friendly, because the carbon you emitting while commuting isn’t being emitted any more.

They also say it’s a great way of working from home when you’re snowed in, although there’s very little detail on how the OfficePOD is heated.

“But how much is it?” you cry. A very good question. One that the company has only just got round to answering in a blog post.

The OfficePOD starts at a mere £14,950 ($24.089). Plus tax. Plus installation. Plus shipping. Plus optional landscaping. I’ll take two.

Not entirely sure I’d be comfortable leaving, say a big iMac in there overnight.

    you and me both

That’s both amusing and semi-practical! A bit on the small side. The immediate disadvantage to me would be the fact that it’d attract folk on the way back from the pub. It’s curiously portaloo- shaped.

We have a lot of similar ‘pods’ in the university library. Quite practical if you need a quiet place to study – just the space that you need to do so. So the idea is really not that bad as it looks.

I think they are actually quite cool. A little expensive yes, but very cool. I do agree that i wouldnt be too keen on leaving my 27″ iMac in there though.

Reading through the list of selling points, I see nothing that is not already true of my laptop sitting on my desk.

One needs only a chair and a table to get every listed advantage of the product (other than “adding a room to your house”.)

i wouldn’t do this outside. sorry but I don’t trust it.

but if it was sound proof with an acoustic interior and a bit bigger I could see it as a way to convert a corner area, or a chunk of basement or such into a home studio for my sound work.

No curtains or shades? If they’re so hip, I’d expect some windows that can darken to opaque. You’re basically sitting in a spotlight at night. Plus how hard could it be to smash in for the computer?

I’m sorry, this is what home offices are for.

  • Camillo

Wow, it’s great. As a greenhouse, though.

You can always go with an old phonebooth, or a broken-down gondola car as a similar alternative…

    It’s the new TARDIS.

  • Mattzook

As long as I have my 2 rottweilers…. security (break-ins) is not a problem if I had one of these OfficePods.

It looks nice, but for that kind of money… I could also afford to just add an extension to my house, thus adding a posh home-office.

The OfficePod has one flaw: no mini-fridge (a must) and no loo (a must).

  • Chapps

Yeah, for that price – and just for practicality – I’d expect it to be about 50% larger. And obviously, it should either include shades or something to block out the sunlight and provide privacy (hey, what if someone’s taking a work break and perusing porn? Just sayin’).

Finally, though, the problem with it being so open is that not everyone lives in the cooler UK. If you put this thing in a Southern California garden, the person inside would be microwaved within a few minutes. Mmmm … lovely smell of BBQ coming from the neighbor’s place, eh?

But it’s an awesome idea and design – very v1.0, though.

The pod looked like something out of a Start Trek TNG episode. Similar style and design esthetic. I could see it on the grounds of Star Fleet Academy in San Francisco or one the outposts on some plant from the Federation.

My suggestion is to not wear a red shirt while working in one of them.

  • Boxodaklaun

Maybe make it slightly larger, so that it can accomodate a Genius Bar….

I would love to put this in the roof garden, if it supports the weight, that is.

  • Levin

    Maybe it is too small!

  • porkchop1234

I’m sorry but I think product wise it’s just a terrible idea. For the same amount of money spent on buying that thing I could just add another room to my house and have a nice sized plush office area with enough room for a LCD TV, small corner wet bar, mini fridge and lots of shelving to display my RC Heli’s. If I was to put that thing in my nice green backyard not only would it be an eyesore it would attract a lot of unwanted attention and I guarantee the mac left inside would go missing inside of a day.
