VLC, the versatile play-anything video app that I have installed on every Mac I’ve had admin access to in the last half decade, has gotten a great update in its iOS incarnation. VLC for iOS not only looks better, but will now grab video from Dropbox and Google Drive.

On first launch you’ll notice the iOS 7-ified UI, which looks great: nice and flat, but just as orange as you’d expect. There are also new control gestures, support for new streaming protocols and lots of other fairly significant tweaks. But the big news is “GDrive integration and Dropbox streaming.”

Now you can play video direct from your Dropbox, turning your magic folder into a watch-anywhere video library. And remember, VLC can handle most video formats, so you only need to toss the video file into your Dropbox or Google Drive and you’re done – no conversion necessary.

As ever, the open-source app is free, and Universal for iPad and iPhone. Go grab it.
