VLC, the popular open-source media player, has made its comeback on iOS and is available to download now from the App Store. The release comes more than two years after VLC was pulled from iOS due to licensing issues, but this time it’s back for good — with lots of improvements.
The universal app, which supports iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch, and is completely free, looks almost identical this time around. But there are plenty of changes under the hood.
In addition to faster performance, you can enjoy media syncing over Wi-Fi, via Dropbox, and more; and support for network streams, video filters, and subtitle rendering.
If you’re unfamiliar with VLC, it’s a do-it-all media player that’ll let you enjoy your favorite movies and TV shows in almost any format. Its famous for its ability to handle almost any codec, which is why it has become the go-to third-party media player on Mac and PC.
