PopCap has today confirmed the release date for the much-anticipated Plants vs. Zombies 2: It’s About Time, which will be exclusive to iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch. The company has also released an awesome new launch trailer that teases some of the new plants and new worlds.

Plants vs. Zombies 2 will arrive on iOS on Thursday, July 18, and it won’t be coming to any other platform — sorry, Android users! PopCap says the title has been designed “from the ground up,” with new worlds, levels, plants, and zombies. There will also be new ways to play released on an ongoing basis, so there will always be more to do.

“Leveraging the touch interface of Apple’s popular mobile devices, Plants vs. Zombies 2 includes all-new touch-screen power-ups that enable players to “break the fourth wall” and interact with zombies directly, as well as via plant defenses,” PopCap said in its press release today.

“It’s about time!” said Allen Murray, Senior Producer for Plants vs. Zombies 2. “We’re confident that players will see the love and attention we’ve put into this game. We’ve created wild new ways to experience the plants and zombies you know and love as well as packing the game with tons of completely new content, and we’re still hard at work coming up with even more cool stuff that will keep Plants vs. Zombies 2 fresh and evolving in the months and years following launch.”

Plants vs. Zombies 2 will be a free download like a lot of recent EA games, which means there will almost certainly be plenty of in-app purchases. This approach isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, but it is the one now favored by a lot of big developers.

Hopefully it won’t spoil the title too much. PopCap does state that “the vast majority of the game will be entirely free to play.”
