The Genius Bar is a little sparse, and the flooring never would have been approved by Steve Jobs, but if you find yourself in Kabul with a deep thirst for the latest Apple gadgetry, the unofficial Apple Store of Afghanistan is the place to go.
While Apple has been busy dominating the retail world with its highly profitably shops, poor Afghanistan has been left without an official Apple Store to call its own, so someone decided to open one up.
Located in the posh Share-e-Naw district, this unofficial Apple Store sells about five or six iPhones a day to well-off Afghans who have started to embrace the trendiness of Apple. Most of the products are purchased through distributors in Dubai, and demand has been so great that the owners are even thinking about expanding to a second location.
But just because business is booming at the unofficial Afghanistan Apple Store doesn’t mean Apple’s going to embrace it just yet. The store manager, Mohammed Nasery, said he took pictures of the store and mailed them to Apple when it opened, but he never heard back.
