CES 2013 bug LAS VEGAS, CES 2013 – The odds of Apple coming out with an iPhone with a 3D display is fairly negligible. Jony Ive’s not going to let it happen. But just because Cupertino doesn’t want to embrace 3D doesn’t mean you can’t watch 3D videos on your iPhone.

Thanks to a clever iPhone screen protector from Nanoveu, you can give your iPhone a 3D display for cheap. Plus, you don’t have to download any special apps or anything like that. Nanoveu’s lens will do all the work for you.

The whole thing works by using nano technology to create small prisms on a thin plastic film that snuggles up to your iPhone’s display like a normal screen protector. The lens sends slightly different images to your left and right eyes so that you get the 3D experience without having to use any glasses.

When the GlassesFree 3D film is attached to your iPhone you can still use the touchscreen like normal. iOS itself won’t be in 3D, but you can add 3D movies to your library and play them on the iPhone to see the 3D. And when the film isn’t making objects pop out of your display, it still acts as a great screen protector that saves your from knicks and scratches.

I played around with the case for a bit and it was pretty impressive. The 3D wasn’t perfect, but for $20, it’s a neat little trick that you can showoff to friends. Nanoveu expects to launch the GlassesFree Film protector sometime in March.
