Photoshop Arrives On iPhone

Adobe has announced the release of Photoshop for your iPhone or iPod touch – although the software is closely tied to Adobe’s Photoshop.com photo hosting and sharing service.

The snappily-named “Photoshop.com Mobile for iPhone” is free to download. It offers the kind of images editing controls you’d expect to see in an iPhone app: cropping, flipping and rotating; saturation, exposure and tint controls; and a collection of special effects with names like Soft Focus and Sketch.

It also lets you upload to – and I think sync with – a Photoshop.com account, which offers 2GB of image storage for free and the option to get more space and extra features if you’re prepared to pay up for them. I’m not sure if the app also lets you share in other ways – via email, for example.

Normally, I’d download the app myself and test it out to get the answers to these questions, but that’s where we encounter a problem: the app is not (yet) available in the UK store, so right now I can’t get my hands on it.

If this app is free and doesn’t tie you to Adobe’s online hosting, that will be very impressive. If, however, there’s no way to get your images out of it except to host them there, it won’t be quite so compelling. I’ve asked Adobe to clarify this – as soon as I get a reply from them, I’ll update this post with the details.

DON'T MISS

Of course in the meantime, some of you lovely Cultists might want to grab the app for yourselves – let us know what you think about it in the comments.

I have most of the other photo editing iPhone tools, and this one is a very good addition. By being able to use finger gestures, it’s possible to get fairly precise adjustments to your image. All that is needed now is the ability to lasso an area on the photo that you want to manipulate. The image can be saved to your camera roll. You cannot email directly from the app. I tried to set up a Photoshop.com account and got error messages telling me an account for my email address already existed, then rejected my attempts to sign in. I know I never joined previously (never even heard of it) so go figure! But a good app all the same.

I downloaded the app, which is nice indeed. You save the photo, on the site, or on your camera, up to you. Once you save it on the camera, you can do whatever you want with it.

I found very little use of this app. I have – and use – about 8 other photo editing apps. This PS app does have a functional and easy to use cropping tool. Other than that, I found most or almost all of the other functions gimmicky and too extreme. Even the saturation tool is just so-so. Listen- I am the first one to rave about a great app. This isn’t it; at least for me. They need to create better tools. I tried editing about ten photos before I wrote this. I saved none of them. I’ve been shooting 40 plus years; I have enough experience and knowledge (I hope) to know what is useful. Come on guys – you can do better.

I agree. there are plenty of other apps the do the same thing, if not better.

This only has the brand going for it.
