Craig Mundie, Microsoft’s chief strategy and research officer, recently said that Windows Phone 7 beat Siri to the punch. In an interview, Mundie argued that Apple only marketed Siri well, and that Microsoft has had the same technology for more than a year already.
Jason from TechAU has created a video face-off between Microsoft’s voice recognition software, called TellMe, and Siri on the iPhone 4S. We’ll let you guess which one actually works.

Jason tries to create a meeting, send a text message, check the time, and play an artist. While Siri gets each command correct, TellMe fails miserably every time.
This video comparison doesn’t even demonstrate Siri’s ability to understand context. Had Jason said something like, “Do I need an umbrella tomorrow?” Siri would have been able to determine what he had meant.
The point isn’t to be first, the point is to be the best.

Interesting. I have not used Siri, but back in 1996 I did use Kurzweil Voice Plus. It worked GREAT until I caught a cold. Noisy environments are a true test and NOTHING like in the movies. Siri is a great tech, but I truly think some are taking it a bit far.
Freedotz, I wondered the SAME thing. When I HATE something, I try NOT to talk about it (that’s word of mouth advertising). Some people just need to learn how to be more productive and positive. Apple’s products ARE NOT about who is the ‘BEST’, they are about ‘EFFICIENCY’. ALL Apple users know this. I use a Window PC for designing, but when it comes to sound manipulation my MacBook (with GarageBand) is super efficient. Though I can get the same results on my Win 7 PC with Adobe Audition with a LOT of tweaking. 2 to 3 minutes on the MacBook or up to 2 hours on Win PC? IF i had to say which is best, NOTHING beats the Star Trek Holodeck! It’s the BEST! :)

Truth. I think the ONLY time Apple was ‘desperate’ was the time when people would go into retail outlets and ask for ‘blueberry’ or ‘strawberry red’. Those devices were assembled carelessly, even though they looked snazzy. Apple is by far no means desperate. Rule 1: “If you have something good, you don’t really have to advertise, the users will do that for you.” Keeping this short, when is the last time you saw a Sprite commercial? It sells. Now how about MS Zune? Millions of users (kids and adults) can’t be wrong.

1) Is the PC “equivalent” to the Mac? It’s amazing hearing people I know complaining how “inefficient” their PC is and their mac is so far more efficient. about 99% of the time, they picked up a piece of shit PC and comparing it to a $2000+ mac. I answer with, well that’s your problem. You are comparing a Yaris to a Mercedes. Maybe if you had a “Lexus”, it would be different. If you buy a Yaris, don’t expect it to perform as well as a Mercedes. But, if you buy a Lexus, you can expect it to preform as well as a Mercedes. That’s the problem.
2) What program are you used to? That’s plays a huge factor. A program that you are not that familiar with will take far more time and be less efficient than a program you are familiar with. I know people who can use Pro tools or Adobe Audition far more efficient, quicker than others who are using GarageBand.
3) What’s the overal quality of the finished product? yes, it may be far more efficient (less time and less clicks) but how is it compared to the finished product from the other one that takes more time and more clicks? You can brag on how you can do something with Garageband on a mac only takes you 2 or 3 minutes and how it takes you 2 to 3 hours to do it on a PC with Adobe Audition, but what’s the overall quality of the finished products? Last I checked, Garageband is a $15 product. Adobe Audition is a $350 program. you’re comparing a consumer product to a “professional” product. Maybe that’s your problem there.

1. Efficient = ANYTHING that works well for you.
2. I went to college for Pro Tools and Dreamweaver, but for some odd reason purchased Adobe Production Studio Premium and GoLive CS2 – Picked them up with no training. Using them was like second nature. Audition, same thing. I CAN use it, but I get A LOT of variable sounds “that sounds good!.. wait, that sounds good too… aw which one to use?” GarageBand hits the nail faster – AS long as my pop-filter is in on and I’m listening live. The iPad2 just made it portable (‘better’?), though I will say I prefer GarageBand on my MacBook.
I never said it was for everyone. If you know your tools, efficiency and use is its value.
3. No to rain on your parade, but all the professional musicians I know use either Pro Tools or GarageBand (no mentioning Fruity Loops which my friend who does the Tarzan act at Disney uses to put together music for their acts) and the few indie cartoonist at one time used Audition, but smaller self-made artists use Audacity (I still can’t believe that, but ask around).

When you take Windows, the biggest problem is that it is made for a wide range of product so the OS faces trouble and I’m quite sure tellme would have said something else on another phone.

It’s not good enough to simply launch a product or service, it needs to be improved and iterated constantly to stay ahead of the competition. Given there hasn’t been an update to Tellme in more than 12 months, show Microsoft has its focus elsewhere.
I really like WP7 as a platform and hope this video serves as motivation for Microsoft to put more attention, research and budget into this area. The most important point of all being that they actually ship to consumers.
Make no mistake about it, the next version of Tellme will move to more natrual english commands which will align with the company strategy of naturaly user interfaces. Get to it MS.
