Developer Makes Progress On Porting Siri To The iPhone 4 [Video]

According to a report Steven Troughton-Smith has made progress on porting the Siri voice assistant to the iPhone 4. The resulting ported version of Siri isn’t ready for prime time so I wouldn’t get to excited just yet and return that iPhone 4S you bought yesterday.

Steven has worked exclusively with 9to5Mac to port the iPhone 4S Siri voice assistant system to the iPhone 4. The hack is in its starting steps and doesn’t seem to be close to being a full port yet. He was able to get the files needed loaded onto an iPhone 4 which allows Siri to load with all the same features as the iPhone 4S. Here’s a video demonstration of his hack:

The only problems encountered are due to hardware compatibility issues since according to the report Apple isn’t authenticating commands between Siri on an iPhone 4 and the company’s servers. It is also very slow with a sluggish response while in use because Siri doesn’t support the right GPU driver for the iPhone 4.

The biggest revelation is that Siri will work on the iPhone 4 contrary to what Apple might have alluded too. This isn’t the first time the company has played this kind of game with consumers since we’ve a seen many jailbreaks touting features on older model iPhones that allegedly only work on new models.

Be sure to read the rest of the report yourself for some insight into this interesting project.

yeah i figured. I wish Apple would just help their loyal customers instead of trying to squeeze more money out of them. I got the verizon iphone at launch, so i cant upgrade cheaply anytime soon, and apparently apple has blocked siri from working even in jail breaks… wtf apple?

  • Ed

Of course Apple *could* get it to work on older iPhone, but it would not work well. They’re not going to roll out the feature on older hardware if they know it’ll run like crap.

  • Brandon Dillon

You said it right. Apple is a perfectionist company. They don’t just throw out products/features. They make sure they are up to the high standards of performance that consumers rightfully expect from them.

  • Blake

actually the program will run fine. If you see 9to5mac’s newer video he got it running smoothly. Siri will run five on the iPhone 4. The 4s actually has less ram then the iPhone 4. So we will just have to see

  • Soho22

So whats the reason for it not being on the iPad? Yeah, none other than making it exclusive.

  • AriRomano

less ram in the iPhone 4? source?

“The biggest revelation is that Siri will work on the iPhone 4 contrary to what Apple might have alluded too. “

That isn’t true.  All we know is that certain UI elements seem to function but they are low CPU load activities.  They may soon find out that the device isn’t capable of functioning well when dealing with audio processing and ASR.

Even if it does work, don’t count on Apple just letting people do this.  It was likely allowed on just the 4S for other reasons that could include them needing to beef up the Siri servers to support higher traffic.

Lets hunt this developer down, that son of a bitch needs to quit fucking with the code. If he wants a phone that does what he wants he needs to make his own… THIS IS PROPRIETARY SOFTWARE!!!! Not some stupid open source Android, “Anal-droid” software…. is what Apple is saying.

    obvious troll is obvious

  • Smells like a man

the second you insult someone, you lose ALL credibility for your argument. Technology is supposed to evolve, not just sit and remain the same.

    I love Apple products…
    I hate Apple the Company..

Wait what …. how .. uhh
    well goes like this
I want the iphone 4s and all greatness, and i will buy it, but why try to force me by not including Siri on my iphone 4 ?

like when  they made i tunes not work on pree Leopard machines –  so if i wanted to keep updating my iPhone via itunes i had to get a new mac –  since i cant buy in the app store via my now SOOO old (4 years old) MacBook pro that works PERFEKT –  but no no no you cant use itunes on it –  so i cant use my iphone 4 with that –  so i have ge get a newer mac.
its no problem for me because i am getting a newer mac, faster than the “forced upgrade march” by apple –  but the idea of it makes me sick – and i hope they slows it down to a minimum, were it truly is the hardware setting the limits not some made up limits.

that is why i HATE apple as a company – their products how ever are epic

(@Felipe Tadeo – I can totaly understand why ppl JB – and if you pay for the use of the software you should be allowed to mod it think of it this way .. you buy a care, but are not allowed to put on 18″ rims or any other rims – or even put a blanket in it for your dog to sit on…. because the car maker has made a EULA that state you “cant mod the car in any way” – are you kidding me ?

  • Phil

You’re totally right! If we buy something IT’S OURS! But the way these people are looking at it is as scripture. Kinda like a song. Since code is a form of writing, they probably feel like we’re changing the lyrics to a song or something.

    But what about this:

Siri is not local, it’s a service like Google and Square, in your analogy it would be the carwash that has a huge sing: NO IPHONE 4s allowed. Would this still be okay to modify??

Now, Let me make it clear since some people like Smells like a man seems to think I’m insulting him, I agree that if we buy something we should be able to do with it what we please, but as a business you guys have to understand.

The iPhone 4 s is NOTHING without Siri. Which makes sense, because Apple is a software company. It’s the whole killer app thing. Windows is nothing without it’s spreadsheets, Mac OS:X is nothing without Safari or it’s apps. Just like the iPhone is NOTHING without it’s “killer APPS.” It’s business guys. Plain and simple.

  • Phil

So your saying polaroid cameras  should be hacked into taking digital pictures too instead of just buying a new one?

  • Phil

    That’s true! WTH??

  • Smallworlddesign

uhhmm – you guys know Siri – in the version released before the Company was swallowed, works just fine on an iphone 4. Been using it- and loving it for something like a year now and yes, even in its early stages, it’s wonderful.
not sure why all the hair pulling over porting unless apple added chunks of stuff that couldn’t possibly run on a year old phone….sigh

4s has the SAME amount of RAM as the iPhone 4, 512MB.

Everybody though the 4s would have 1GB, but alas not.

  • Hampus

Because the app that was only in the US app store to begin with is now gone and as far as I’ve been hearing the servers are no longer communicating with it.
