Video: iPod Touch is Really Hot

The same day that a friendly Mac-head uploaded some unboxing pictures of his new iPod Touch, he also got the notion to shoot video of the iPhone-without-a-phone. It’s kind of what you would expect: A lot of swooping icons, scrolling on touch, video playing, the accelerometer not detecting an orientation shift…

It’s absolutely beautiful, though. If someone figures out Skype for this thing, it could be the greatest telecom network-free communication device ever built. It’s interesting to note that the iTunes Store Mobile didn’t finish loading in the video. Since this is over WiFi, I can only cringe to imagine an iPhone trying to download a song over EDGE…

Anybody out there already got a Touch? Do you ever leave the house now?

    I want one of those babies! I’m not gonna give in for now (my old 4th gen iPod will get refurbished next month with a new HDD and a new battery), but when the replacement parts give up on it (hopefully not for at least 2-3 years), the iPod touch will definitely be its replacement. By then, all the little quirks will be worked out. And I sure hope that its HDD capacity will be higher.

    Pete, coupla things: the iTunes “Wi Fi Media Store” won’t work over EDGE. But if you meant that in jest, oops.

    Also, until someone debuts a dock-connector with a mic and speakers, Skype for iPod Touch won’t matter. :(

    Yeah, the Touch and iPhone won’t detect an orientation change in the horizontal plane. It needs to be vertical (not exactly, but more or less) so gravity can take effect. Spinning it on a desk won’t affect the accelerometer.

    I can’t wait to get my hands on one of these! Also, did it bother anybody else that the guy shooting the video didn’t bother to spit out his candy beforehand? It’s very annoying watching the video while it sounds like this guy is sucking on a Starburst!

    The accelerometer worked fine. The problem was that he just flipped the iPod while it was lying flat on the table. Accelerometers detect the force of gravity, not the orientation of the north and south poles.

    The guy had it loading for, like, 4 seconds. It takes way longer than that for it to load on my iMac G5 over a 3.5 mbps connection via ethernet. Come on.

    I am entering this from my iPod touch… It is the greatest gadget I’ve ever had! I am a t-mobile customer so I couldn’t do an iPhone, I am not one to mess around with hacking and unlocking, but the touch fills the void nicely. Now I just wish the iTunes videos would truly be in widescreen (right now they are still letterboxed 4:3). The zoom cuts off a great deal of the picture. Everything else is great!

    …got a 4GB iphone for my wife and a 16gb ipod touch for myself yesterday. The touch is VERY cool. I was at a block party last night and could see 10-15 different home wifi networks. a few were even totally wide open so i was able to do some browsing! I must say though, that the iPhone is much cooler than the touch but even at 8GB it just isn’t big enough… thats the only reason i got the touch rather than the phone. Edge really isn’t bad when all you are doing is browsing the internet. Who uses an iPhone’s internet really for more than that? For basic browsing edge is totally fine.

    The Touch looks really awesome with a lot of interesting feautures. It’s cool how you will be able to access the iTunes store from the actual iPod. I would wait to buy one until all of the little glitches are fixed though. It is dissappointing that it only has 16GB of memory, so I hope that Apple will come out with one with greater memory capacity in the near future.

    i have one, i loved it, but then the internet started to screw up. it wouldn’t detect my network, while my psp and my imac detected the network while they are all next to eachother. i really cant stand the internet on the touch.
