Free Open Source iPhone Unlock Released

It’s still arcane and command-line driven, but the hackers at iPhone Dev Team have created an unlock application that’s free to the world. The iPhone can head to T-Mobile, Europe and the rest of the world…now.

All the details are here, but the rest of us might still want to wait for the GUI version. This is not simple stuff, and many report that YouTube gets broken. Still, I’d love to see this become so prevalent that Apple starts selling the iPhone unlocked out of the box. And while I’m at it, I would like American cell carriers not to suck, so I guess I can dream on…

Yay. Bring on the GUI driven version so as us mere mortals can enjoy the benefits of not being stuck with AT&T. I’m abroad at the end of the month and don’t fancy getting a huge phone bill while roaming.

They have released a beta GUI version: http://www.freeiphoneunlock.com/unlock/ ,I it takes awhile but there should be a new one soon.

    Here, here.
While we’re at it, lets throw cable companies and ISPs in there as well.

Question: if you unlock the phone and use another carrier will wireless data services (not WiFi) still work?

it’ll be 5 years before Apple sells ‘em unlocked out of the box. By the it should be a 100gb machine that works on local WiMax networks, works with Skype, wirelessly streams ti AppleTV, and costs $85… :)

Maybe I’ve been exposed to to much RDF, but when I read that I didn’t think it was crazy at all. Except for the price point. I don’t think the old iPod interface is going away in 5 years. In fact it’s hard for me to imagine what the next major evolution in the iPod line will be now that they have such a rock-solid lineup. So, if the iPhone was $85 (including inflation) would the Shuffle be like, $5?
