Development Company is Porting Android Apps to the iPad

The developers at Myriad are working on porting Android apps to the iPad. Alien Dalvik 2.0 is a project that aims to run apps coded for Android in the iPad’s iOS environment.

Alien Dalvik effectively wraps Android apps in runtime packaging to create a seamless experience for the user. Android apps can be run on the iPad’s home screen like regular App Store apps.

“Myriad Alien Dalvik brings Android applications to non-Android devices, allowing OEMs, operators and application stores to leverage the Android eco-system across a much wider range of mobile devices. Android applications run unmodified and with no loss of performance on non- Android platforms.

From a user perspective, Alien Dalvik is completely transparent. Ported applications appear as native and can be seamlessly installed on the user’s device without user disruption. All the user sees is that he now has access to a wider range of applications, thus encouraging a higher frequency of downloads and increased ARPU.”

Myriad wants the Android platform to become ubiquitous across all types of devices. That means that iPad, eReaders, etc. would all be able to theoretically run standalone Android apps next to native apps.

Developers from the company will be demoing the project at the CTIA 2011 conference next week. It’s an interesting idea to say the least, so we’ll be curious to see what comes out of Alien Dalvik in the future.

Wouldn’t you have to download this from the App Store?  Seems like a remote possibility, not just because of the Duh! factor, but also since it would almost have to dig into iOS to run the apps.

They definately have been in the news lately, mainly for their webOS version.

Would the app pass the Apple Store? I wonder if Apple would say that it bypassed their app store for “in app purchases-i.e. any android app”
They also seem to want the vendor/oem to buy a license to it as opposed to end user purchases. I doubt Apple would licence this for the iOS.

    Good god, WHY?

Let’s not spread that ugliness around anymore than it already is.

Is there some amazing Android tablet app that I’m not aware of? One that doesn’t exist on iOS? Are there even Android tablet apps?

  8. Cholton1 says:

Oh good. All the android apps that were never good are coming to iOS. All the best iOS apps were ported to android… We already have the good shit. Sorry :/

I love the idea of Apple getting 30% of android apps bought through this app.

  11. CharliK says:

In theory. But it will likely be a jailbreak app, not an official one

As someone who carries an iPhone along side an Android phone, I have to agree.

The same apps made by the same companies are horrible on Android.

Seriously, why would anyone want the crappy low quality, low standard and very fugly UI on their iOS device? We already have all the best stuff…what could we possible want from the android world? heh

I think its an educational project aimed to help iOS people better understand how android tablet users are suffering.

  19. Hampus says:

The only apps worth porting would be stuff like file managers that wouldn’t work on iOS anyway…
Well I guess the Android version of Evernote has kind of an different design that do look pretty nice but that’s it…

  20. Hampus says:

It’s going to be made for iOS at some point anyway…
Seeing how it’s actually been release for touch android now and not just the Xperia Play they’d probably want to focus on iOS next.

Almost all the Android Apps are Free, no one would pay for that garbage.  Android users don’t pay for Apps as a whole, they wanted something cheap when they bought the phone and they want free or cheap Apps.

Google Navigation – yes I would use it for this alone. iPhone’s maps (and still non-existant voice navigation) are a full generation behind Google Navigation. Not that my iPhone 4’s GPS works in the car without taping it to the roof anyway. It would be nice to have just ONE browser on my device which supported Flash when I needed it also.
