Although much of the tech news bandwidth has been consumed with chatter about the Apple iPhone 5, Samsung has shipped 10 million Android-powered Galaxy S IIs smartphones — before touching foot on U.S. soil. Many expect the Samsung v. Apple battle to be the cage fight of cellular titans.

“In just five months the Galaxy S II has seen tremendous growth,” Samsung announced over the weekend. The smartphone was launched in April. Speculation is the S II and the Apple iPhone 5 will offer similar features. The new Apple handset is expected to include a unibody construction, and 8-megapixel camera.

There are some provisos to Samsung’s statement. The South Korean company mentions shipments of the Galaxy S II rather than sales. Apple sold 20 million of its iPhone 4 during the second quarter of 2011. The iPhone 4 is more than a year old.

The battle between the Samsung and Apple smartphones could be a mirror of its current legal battles that stretch across the globe.

They shipped 10m unites of a brand new device and that took them a long time.
While Apple shipped 20M unites of an old (without any current hardware, and an old operating system) device(currently – used to be the best in those terms,iOS is still the best OS though).
    See the difference ?
So if you do the math… the iPhone 5 should sell the same amount of unites, within a month.
Samsung – will they ever give up?!

    Samsungwho?

  3. Filippus Johansson says:

And make that (shipped), the actual number of units sold could be a hole other story. Why can’t everyone follow apple and report the number of sold devices instead of shipped? Hate it…

  4. Zoltán Fehér says:

ios > android. no matter how many cores Samsung use.

my best friend’s mom makes $77 an hour on the computer. she has been out of job for 9 months but last month her check was $7487 just working on the computer for a few hours. read about it and check “Online Income Solution” to get started , http://xub.me/te

Because nobody reports unimpressive numbers (Apple included… notice they never tell us how many eBooks or iTunes movies they have sold).  The fact that Samsung chose to report “shipped” numbers v. “sold” speaks volumes.  All this means is that the stockrooms of cellular stores around the world are very full.  I’m sure RIM “shipped” a whole lot of Playbooks too.

Lol this is just sad. I mean, sure, the Galaxy S ll is probably one of the only Android phones with a chance to stay within the realms last generation’s top model iPhone (iPhone 3GS), in terms of sales – but the iPhone 4 pummels it and the iPhone 5 will likely pummel it too. Let’s not forget that the iPhone 4 is a great phone and a fantastic deal for $99. When that takes the spot of the 3GS, it’ll likely beat the Galaxy S ll 2-3 times over. I think iPhone might seriously make a dent in Android marketshare overall. We all know that iPhone combined with iPod touch and iPad still lead the mobile OS world.

    What an ugly phone.

  9. KianKok says:

Android sucks. It stuttered here and there. I dunno why people still want to use. Especially those nerdy geeks.

  10. KianKok says:

    Even dual core also stuttered.

  11. andrew says:

    So what Samsung ….

When I left my last employerI had an I-Phone 3 (company) and my Blackberry Storm (personal) … I had to give up the IPhone .. big mistake.

What the Fandroids just don’t understand is that people just want our stuff to work right … seamless sync, Apps that work, ease of use, phones that don’t crash every day.   In other words IPhone.

Sorry not going to take a chance with Android … its not worth it

Shipped to stores to sit on shelves and collect dust.  Quick everyone, go to the store and you can own one of the 10 million most advanced paperweights.

  13. Alexander530 says:

It’s because Sammy does not care about timelines.  They just release phones with similiar specs but different names whenever they feel like it, lol.

  14. SapirKraus says:

    Actually,they do.
They talk about iTunes sales in the September(now,October) media event,
And I think they said how many iBooks they sold in the iPhone 4 announcement… or some other event…

  15. Figurative says:

    Boycott Samsung !

  16. Juan José Olivares Gutiérrez says:

Yay! We can trade 5 Galaxy II for 1 iPhone 5

  17. minimalist1969 says:

They talk about iTunes music sales, and occasionally about TV show sales but the movies are not selling well.  They never mention the numbers.  No company in their right mind mentions unflattering sales numbers (unless they are forced to do so by law).

  18. James T says:

What exactly is a Samsung Galaxy S 2 Phone? The name of non-iPhone phones is rather ridiculous because there’s almost no point in me asking a person what phone they have because you’re just going to answer…”Ok, so it’s not an iPhone, so what is it exactly?”

So you have to sit through 5-10min of them describing what the hell it is and them trying to tell you why they chose it over the iPhone and 9out of 10 times of me asking is because of money. They didn’t choose a phone over the iPhone they settled for a cool little iPhone-esque phone that was cheaper.

Get the name right for the Devil’s sake!!
    It’s Samesong.

  20. chano says:

On the ‘hole’, you could be right.

  21. wayzom says:

That shipped number has been 10 million for a month or 2 now..

  22. Stephen Ambruzs says:

haha…. all you isheep love your stupid phone.   The SGS II blows the pants off the iphone.  try using it first before you mock it.

  23. se7endreams says:

lol what are you doing on an apple site?

  24. Shaun says:

I was very impressed when I had a play with the S2. It’s light, very thin and the 4.3″ screen looks awesome. I just hope the iPhone 5 has a similiar size screen. I really don’t want to ditch my iPhone but if they stick with a 3.5″ screen then I’m off.

  25. JimmyDavis357 says:

I just got a $827.89 iPad2 for only $103.37 and my mom got a $1499.99 HTV for only $251.92, they are both coming tomorrow. I would be an idiot to ever pay full retail prîces at places like Walmart or Bestbuy. I sold a 37″ HTV to my boss for $600 that I only paid $78.24 for. I use Gr?bPenny.?om

  26. guest says:

    Ip5 will do 10m in 2 weeks :)

  27. imajoebob says:

How many of those phones were sold in countries that don’t have an iPhone carrier?

It all boils down to this: Somebody at Apple uses “iPhone” & “5” in the same email, and the press goes into Armageddon mode.  Samsung sells a billion smartphones and the articles mentions iPhone more times than Galaxy.

  28. prof_peabody says:

Only if by “blows the pants off” you actually mean that it has a stuttery UI with confusing options, a garish over-saturated screen, is too big to hold in your hand properly and is made out of low grade plastic.

  29. MacGoo says:

Ooo – you told ’em now Steve-o! Lookit them apple luvers scramble! Awe, one of ’em grabbed a pitchfork – he cain’t barely hold it. In’it cute? Hey now, be careful wit’ dat, li’l guy…hey, watcha doin’ there….YEAUGGGGH! My foooot!

Moral of the story? Apple hating trolls should stay out of orchards.

  30. Dreamgrifter Films says:

No matter how many they ship, it still won’t be an iPhone..

  31. Mikic007 says:

I really do not need 700 $ phone, since I have every other IT device already at home (and all of them have bigger screens). For 200$ I got perfectly good device, which serves me well. And that’s all point why Samsung will be better soon …

  32. Papz says:

Why do people even compare over an iPhone 4 ? The retina display is the best display I ever used !!!

  33. Blueguyconn says:

the iphone is not perfect… but i love my iphone and its worth every penny. i can hardly wait for the new one to come up!!!!!!!!!!

  34. CharliK says:

“The South Korean company mentions shipments of the Galaxy S II rather than sales.”

That’s a key statement. Just because they were shipped doesn’t mean they sold.

  35. ctt1wbw says:

What’s the difference between this Android phone and the hundreds of other with the same specs?  You have to remember that not everyone likes the same phone as you, you AndroidSheep.

  36. Badrichierich says:

Hyundai? Honda? What’s the difference? Cheap, Korean imitation, copycat, phone with crappy battery that crashes all the time.

  37. Egholi84 says:

    Thank god for that

  38. Egholi84 says:

Amen to that! And the isheep. You couldn’t be more right. I love how they think they’re so unique and superior because they buy an phone, when it’s the most standard, non customizable interface you could get. I had to jailbreak my iPad 2 just to get new icons or fake widgets. How ridiculous is that! I have an evo 3d, which replaced my galaxy s, and they’re amazing. Everyones device is unique to their personality. On the iPhone you can change the wallpaper…wow…brand loyalty is almost as pathetic as the people that adhere to it. I do like the gpu accelerated ui, but that’s all. A 3.5″ screen is unacceptably small. You have to squint to watch a movie! Plus no swype or keyboard replacement f any kind? Texting takes tedious hours! Come on apple, let your loyal shee…err…fans…catch up to android users abilities!

  39. Egholi84 says:

Do your research genius, you couldn’t be further off. Once again, here’s that uneducated, pathetic brand loyalty.

  40. Robert Norris Hills says:

Only if you live in the shire Prof. Peabody.

4.5inch screen is PERFECT for people that are not accompanying dwarfs to destroy the one ring.

  41. Robert Norris Hills says:

<3’s people that write off a product without using it.

They have a better battery life and better components than any apple device that has been made yet. Of course, I wouldn’t expect a mindless follower to actually do research before posting hateful rubbish. The day I ditched my iphone was a total eye opener for me.

  42. 5imo says:

Foxconn would not be able to cope! there F#@KIN shit

  43. 5imo says:

Samsung good design dose not = thinness or a lumpy phone. it is a combination of a lot of different things and you aint got any; seriously you added an even uglier skin to android than than stock Android! Also there are more lines on that phone than Gordon Ramsey’s face!
