How Thick Are The Branches On Apple’s Gadget Family Tree? [Infographic]

This fantastic infographic divvies up exactly how much of Apple’s sales comes from each branch on its tree of devices: iPhone, Mac, iPod and iPad. I’m astonished by how big the iPad has grown practically overnight from a twig to a branch: it’s about to overtake Mac sales, and doubtlessly will by the iPad 3 at latest.

The infographic appeared originally in the September 12th issue of Time Magazine. Thanks to Obama Pacman for the heads up.

This “infographic” tells us practically nothing.

It might as well be a pie chart of percentage of sales by department as that is the only thing measured and the only thing displayed in graphic form.  The rest of it is just a bunch of random Apple facts placed along the branches of the tree in absolutely no relation to their importance or to sales (or anything else for that matter).

Heyy Guys, I just got a $829.99 iPĂĄd2 for only $103.37 and my mom got a $1499.99 HDTV for only $251.92, they are both coming with USPS tomorrow. I would be an idiot to ever pay full retail prices at places like Walmart or Bestbuy. I sold a 37″ HDTV to my boss for $600 that I only paid $78.24 for.

    Nice idea, crappy execution.

The iPod is 7%? No.  Without arguing about their numbers, the iPod is 70%.  SEVENTY, not seven.  Anyone with even a pssing knowledge of Apple products knows that the iPhone and iPad are direct descendants (branches of) the iPod. Even woithout the prior knowledge the existence of the iPod touch – just an iPhone without the phone is a BIG clue.

If we want to argue the details we can  get into whether iTunes belongs to the iPod or the Mac, and if that ridiculous statistic about Mac sales being higher in countries with more iPods is cause or effect, but those aren’t errors by a factor of 10.
