Better Than Angry Birds: Siege Hero [Review]

If Angry Birds opened your eyes to the joys of knocking things down, but you’ve since got bored with all that clucking and those pigs snorting at you, perhaps it’s time you looked for an alternative. In which case, allow me to recommend Siege Hero.

I’ve been playing this game for weeks, and I think it’s better than Angry Birds.

In Siege Hero, you pit your wits against a variety of ancient world characters dwelling in ever more complicated castles made of stone, wood, metal and other stuff. Your task is to knock down the castles, kill the bad guys, and try to save the lives of the innocent maidens they’ve captured.

Unlike the ‘Birds, your shooting directly in front of you, not viewing the siege from the side. A crosshair pops up when you take aim, letting you pick the precise spot where you want your ammo to land. In later levels this can make a big difference – knocking out several pieces with one shot can make or break a level.

There’s a lot that’s similar to the avian knocking things down game, but there’s a lot that’s different too. The physics puzzles work in different ways, and you often have to time your shots just right too. I’ve found Siege Hero unexpectedly addictive, always enticing me to play a few levels when I have spare moments.

The only downside to Siege Hero is that there’s not much of it. Yet. The first bunch of levels, the Fortress Age, doesn’t take long to complete and until very recently was all alone in the game’s start up screen. Last week it got joined by a second batch, the Age of Discovery. Let’s hope it doesn’t take as long for the third, the Age of Pirates, to be released as it did for its predecessor.

That’s just a minor issue, though. Siege Hero is a fun and satisfying puzzler for all ages, and good value at a dollar.
