Apple’s Products Can’t Be Beaten Because They Use Tech From The Future

Ever wonder how Apple can bring out products year after year that are so far ahead of the competition in construction and materials that they seem downright futuristic… all while maintaining huge profit margins? It’s because Apple is using its enormous pool of cash-on-hand to lock up cutting-edge tech years before the competition has even heard of it.

This thread on Quora explains Apple’s unique strategy.

In short, what Apple does is use its massive pool of cash to strategically shop for new technologies and invest in them, allowing them to come to market years before they otherwise have. There’s a price, though: Apple gets exclusive access to that technology for a window of time, and then a heavy discount on it afterwards.

Apple has access to new component technology months or years before its rivals. This allows it to release groundbreaking products that are actually impossible to duplicate. Remember how for up to a year or so after the introduction of the iPhone, none of the would-be iPhone clones could even get a capacitive touchscreen to work as well as the iPhone’s? It wasn’t just the software – Apple simply has access to new components earlier, before anyone else in the world can gain access to it in mass quantities to make a consumer device. One extraordinary example of this is the aluminum machining technology used to make Apple’s laptops – this remains a trade secret that Apple continues to have exclusive access to and allows them to make laptops with (for now) unsurpassed strength and lightness.

Eventually its competitors catch up in component production technology, but by then Apple has their arrangement in place whereby it can source those parts at a lower cost due to the discounted rate they have negotiated with the (now) most-experienced and skilled provider of those parts – who has probably also brought his production costs down too. This discount is also potentially subsidized by its competitors buying those same parts from that provider – the part is now commoditized so the factory is allowed to produce them for all buyers, but Apple gets special pricing.

This is the reason why two years after the iPad, no one can release a sub-$500 tablet that is nearly as well built or constructed. And it’s why the iPhone 4’s Retina Display still has no competition. It’s tech from the future.

That would explain it! I can’t imagine buying a 1st gen iPhone today. We are spoiled by Apple’s cutting edge technology!

… spoiled indeed! off the record the iphone on the picture is kind a cool and kind of NOKIA like!

Hum, okay. There’s no such thing as “tech of the future”, because “tech of the future” implies we don’t have it at present. Geez.

Yet you read the title of this article AND STILL took the time to leave a comment.

You must be having a slow day as well…

Hits the nail on the head. Look at those 4G/LTE patents they snatched up a few days ago. Perfect example.

Thank you Captain Literal Net, we really needed that comment to wake us from our stupidity.

It’s been claimed that Android handsets are much further ahead of the curve than iPhones are.  Bigger displays, LTE, more powerful cameras, HDMI out, etc., so I’m not sure if the iPhone can be said to be years ahead.  Also, Wall Street acknowledges that the iPhone is falling further and further behind Android and is pushing Android as the mobile platform of the future.  However, I do think that Apple’s supply chain is likely years ahead due to economies of scale.  But even this Wall Street questions since they claim that the sheer numbers of Android devices will cut into Apple margins.  I’m not sure what their theory is based upon.  I could understand if all Android companies were working together, but they’re basically competing with one another, so I doubt that will hold true.

Yep. The whole reason the iphone5 was delayed was because it couldn’t compete in a single category with the Galaxys2.

They needed another 6 months to hope new technology could be invented to help them beat it. Wait much longer and they will need to beat the s3……

It’s called Liquidmetal and its totally the future.  If Apple can blow-mold it and reduce costs while keeping it out of the hands of other companies, then it will increase their margins and make the company more profitable.  I am biding my time but Liquidmetal is HUGE.  It’s the future and will revolutionize material design in the same way that steel and plastics have.

yeah, everyone decides by its own self which components are now better then of the iPhone…my friends are all using this android-devices and I have to say there are huge differences….for example: there might be devices with a 8 m pixel cam, but have you seen this pics? the quality is a pain in the ass….or the touch-panel or the display, you must see the difference….so if the wsj or who ever else claims that some parts included in other devices are better, then its also important to figure out under which circumstances these parts are tested….or faster processors for instance, have you activated some apps on samsung devices, I mean if you find any good apps, then you will see that there still are huge differences….the iPhone is reference….still…

  19. Guest says:

Who makes future tech? Apple doesn’t make it but those competitors do which means they can out bid apple some day, OR they don’t need to because selling parts make more money than actual phone selling. For selling an iPhone device itself Thosiba and Samsung make more money than apple does.

and to think apple has a time machine or something… :P

  21. James_Smith says:

OMG!  You mean it isn’t just the “Shiny Case” that attracts Apple buyers?  It’s actually because the products are more advanced and built with more quality and durability?

Who would have thought?  I wonder what the Apple-haters will say to that?
