This post is brought to you by RAGE Software, creator of EverWeb.

Remember iWeb, Apple’s website builder for its MobileMe online service, discontinued 2011? When Apple pulled the plug on MobileMe, users had to move their iWeb site over to another host or lose it. Now RAGE Software presents EverWeb, a new website builder meant to replace Apple’s iWeb. EverWeb has a similar interface to make users feel comfortable moving from iWeb to EverWeb. Users can copy and paste text, images and other elements from an iWeb-built site over to EverWeb from their published website. Watch the video and learn more here….

And The Winner Is… Best Music On-Demand Streaming Service

By

rsz_1best-music

In 2001, Apple changed the way music was distributed with the arrival of iTunes, its online digital media store. Since that time, the digital age has evolved rapidly into an era where cassette mix tapes and compact discs are no more. As we enter an era in which the internet serves our every need, alongside digital distribution and the iTunes Store are an increasing number of on-demand music streaming services have become today’s most popular and possibly cost-effective means of accessing the equivalent of walking into your local music store and buying everything.

Unlike Pandora and iTunes Radio (which we’ll cover shortly in another column), on-demand streaming radio allows you to listen to any music in the service library as often as you like.

The competition between the unlimited all-you-can-stream music services is fiercer than ever before, and with the launch of Beats Music this past month, it has become even more difficult to pinpoint the most suitable music subscription for our needs.

However, after hours of research, a comparison of the seven on-demand services on offer (including Beats Music, Spotify, Rdio, Xbox Music, Rhapsody, Sony Music Unlimited, and Google Play Music–see our table below), and some hands-on testing, we’ve managed to narrow down the overwhelming choice to a select few that offer the best overall features and usability. So let’s crack on with the results, shall we?

Apple’s New ‘Your Verse’ Campaign Is A Real Cliffhanger

By

iPad mountaineering

Apple has launched the second story on its new Your Verse microsite.

The campaign — which focuses on showing the iPad in unexpected real world situations — this time chronicles the work of mountaineers Adrian Ballinger and Emily Harrington, who take the iPad with them on their extraordinary climbs.

Ballinger and Harrington use the iPad — along with the Gaia GPS topography app — to plan and navigate their ascent, while also using the device’s access to social networking tools to post photos and progress updates during various junctures of the journey.

Future Apple Earphones Could Track Your Health [Patent]

By

A new Apple patent, published Tuesday, reveals how future Apple earbuds and headphones might incorporate health-monitoring features.

The patent shows how a monitoring system could be cleverly built into Apple earphones, and used to track activity such as speed and distance traveled during exercise. The device would also be able to sense other biometric data relating to metrics body temperature, perspiration rate, and heart rate.

Android Creator Andy Rubin To Take The Stand In Apple-Samsung Battle

By

post-266905-image-2ac9bfc95c8ccb2dab8a2f01ba66ba4e-jpg

Apple may call Andy Rubin — one of the original creators of the Android platform — during next month’s Apple v. Samsung trial, according to court documents.

Rubin left the Android team to work on Google’s robotics projects in March 2013. Should he be called to the stand during the forthcoming trial, he would be cross-examined on the development of Android features which Apple claims infringe on it own patents. He may also be asked to discuss “Google documents relating to such development.”

If Apple calls Rubin, this will be his first time testifying in the various legal battles between Apple and Samsung.

DoubleTwist’s New Mac App Lets You Rip Songs Straight From iTunes Radio

By

Screen_Shot_2014-02-18_at_09

DoubleTwist — the company behind the AirSync tool which allows users to wireless sync their iTunes data — has released a new Mac app, letting users rip songs directly from iTunes Radio.

Called AirPlay Recorder, the app basically tricks iTunes into thinking that it’s an AirPlay device, so that it will stream music. It then records that audio for later offline playback.

This Steve Jobs Portrait Was Made Out Of 20lbs Of Electronic Waste [Updated]

San Francisco artist Jason Mecier has just unveiled a new portrait of Steve Jobs, composed entirely out of e-waste.

Created using 20lbs of electronic waste — including cell phones, iPods, headphones, Mac keyboards, CD-Rs, batteries, mice, and memory sticks — Mecier’s portrait is a meticulous recreation of the iconic 2006 Albert Watson photo of Jobs originally commissioned by Fortune magazine.

The original image was most famously used for the hardcover jacket of Walter Isaacson’s 2011 Steve Jobs biography.

The Retina Mini Is So Disappointing I Switched To The iPad Air [Opinion]

By

I just switched back to the full-sized iPad – in the form of the iPad Air – after over a year of exclusive iPad Mini use. The reason? I can’t get on with the Retina Mini. The Mini is great in many ways, and so you’d think that an A7 Retina-ized version would be even better. But almost since I bought it, the new hi-res Mini has been driving me crazy.

Tetris For iOS Has (Nearly) All Its Pieces In Place [Review]

By

Tetris

As with all classic games, the question about EA’s Tetris for iOS doesn’t have anything to do with whether the core concept is a good one or not (we know that it is), but rather how well the developers have translated it to the world of multi-touch.

Tetris by Electronic Arts
Category: iOS Games
Works With: iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch
Price: $0.99 w/ in-app purchases

If you’re a long-time Tetris fan and former Game Boy owner, chances are you’ll have fond memories of Alexey Pajitnov’s classic puzzle game on mobile. The good news, then, is that at its best EA’s Tetris is every bit as revolutionary and addictive as that game was when you first played it.

Photosmith Now Handles RAW Photos On iPad, Gets Easier To Use

By

Remember Photosmith? Yes, it’s the excellent iPad app that hooks up to your Mac’s Lightroom collection and lets you rate, reject, tag and manage your photo library from the comfort of your couch. That’s the promise, anyway. In practice, it crashes far too often, and it is confuddling (confusing and befuddling) as hell to use.

Ever since v3, though, Photosmith has been a lot easier to use. And now in v3.1, the LR sync part has also been improved, with a whole new sync dashboard. Oh, and the app also adds support for RAW photos.

Grace Encore, The Wi-Fi Speaker From the ’80s

By

Black-ash finish? Check. Big four-inch woofer? Check. Plenty of knobs and dials and even a built-in screen? Check, check, check! If you were to glance sideways at the Grace Encore (GDI-IRC7500) Stereo System whilst simultaneously taking some experimental military drug that altered your perception of time, you’d think that the Encore was from the 1980s.

FTL Gets A New Free Update For Mac, Coming to iPad Early 2014

By

FTL_1-600x328

One of our favorite games, FTL, is getting a massive update, plus an iPad version. That’s pretty darn exciting.

The update includes new advanced weaponry, new systems and subsystems, new drones and equipment, new music, and new story content. Best of all, it’s going to be a free update. In a tweet earlier today, the FTL team updated fans on what’s new, including new features like the clone bay, mind control, and hacking systems. The iPad version will include all of these things, too, in a game that will now be called FTL: Advanced Edition.

Check out the video below for some sweet visuals and auditory goodness.

How To See Where You Took Your Photos At On Your iPhone [iOS Tips]

By

photo map

One of the cool things that your iPhone can do is tag your photos with geolocations. That way, you’ll know where you took the photo in addition to having the photo.

With iOS 7, you can also see your photos on a map, which is all sorts of fun if you travel a bit and like to take vacation photos while you’re there.

It’s easy to enable and access, too, which is a good thing.

‘Metascore’ Offers A Vague Idea Of What You’re About To See

By

Metascore

Metascore — Entertainment — Free

An official Metacritic app exists, but it’s pretty basic; it only shows you new movies. Metascore is also basic, but in a completely different way. It allows you to look up the Metacritic aggregate number for anything on the site, including movies, video games, TV shows, and music. You just type in what you’re looking for, and it gives you the number.

And when I say it gives you the number, I mean that it only gives you the number. You’ll have to go somewhere else if you want to read the reviews, but this is still a handy app if you’re just looking for a general rating.

Eliss Infinity Improves Upon An Already Amazing Game [Review]

By

Eliss Infinity

The original Eliss wowed everyone back in 2009 with its multitouch controls, cool music, and increasingly frantic gameplay. Now, we have Eliss Infinity, which includes the original game and a few more modes to keep even veteran players interested.

Eliss Infinity by Steph Thirion
Category: iOS Games
Works With: iPhone, iPad
Price: $2.99

Eliss is a puzzle/action/insanity game in which you have to manipulate the sizes of “planets” to make them fit inside of rings. You do this by combining smaller ones by dragging them into each other or splitting larger ones by pulling them apart with your thumbs. But differently colored planets can’t touch, or they’ll eat each other away.

That’s the basic idea. But Infinity has a lot more to offer.

Check Or Uncheck More Than One Track At A Time In iTunes [OS X Tips]

By

basic iTunes list

When you’re using iTunes in list view to see all your songs listed in order, you can sort that list by the columns across the top.

If you notice, there’s a little checkbox to the left of each track. These checkboxes tell iTunes when to use the tracks or not, like when you’re ripping CDs, using the Match Only Checked Items Smart Playlist option, and when syncing to your iPhone. If you uncheck a song, it won’t be burned to a CD, added to a specific Playlist, or synced to your iPhone. To make that happen, simply click on the checkbox to the left of any track and it will be unchecked.

But what if you want to uncheck more than one track at once?

Iron Man Is Jesus In Robo Nativity? [Review]

By

Totally not Iron Jesus.
Totally not Iron Jesus.

Alright, so the Iron Man-shaped hero in Robo Nativity is totally not licensed. I was unsure if he was supposed to be more like Mega Man until a helpful prompt informed me that for a minimal fee I could also play as War Machine. So, you’re definitely playing as Iron Man in this curiously named platformer-meets-endless runner.

Robo Nativity by Khary Menelik
Category: iOS Games
Works With: iPhone, iPad
Price: Free

You start off running along the ground beneath various platforms. Enemies and obstacles require you to jump and fire as you collect as many gold coins as you can. As far as this being a nativity, you won’t encounter any babes in mangers, but the Mandarin-like baddies this not-Iron Man shoots do look a bit like wise men. So, don’t look for any new religions in Robo Nativity, unless you are way into the idea that Tony Stark is the messiah (I kinda am).

Jony Ive Vanishes From Apple’s Executive Profiles Page [Update]

By

Screen_Shot_2014-02-17_at_12

UPDATE: Shortly after posting this news item, Ive’s photo appeared back on the U.S. Executives Profiles page.

In a strange move, Jony Ive’s picture has vanished from Apple’s online list of executives – although his profile page is still accessible to users who type in the address.

While it would be a massive mistake to jump to conclusions, this change has previously signaled the departure of an Apple Senior VP — as it did when former iOS head Scott Forstall left the company in 2012.

Google And Apple Are Rejecting All New ‘Flappy’ Apps

By

post-266795-image-1bca242314d23c93888121dd886193b3-jpg

After being bombarded with Flappy Bird clones, it appears that both Google Play and the iOS App Store have started rejecting all new apps featuring the word “flappy” in their titles.

The move was publicized by developer Ken Carpenter of Mind Juice Media who took to Twitter to reveal that his game, Flappy Dragon, was rejected during the iTunes authorization process because the “name attempts to leverage a popular app.”
