By

So scary.
So scary.

One of our picks for the top games of 2012 is The Walking Dead, Telltale Games’ brilliant video game translation of the award-winning comic book and TV show.

It’s getting a sequel, of sorts, in the form of The Walking Dead: 400 Days, a transitional piece between Seasons one and two of The Walking Dead game proper.

Today, IGN reported that 400 Days is indeed headed our way, with a Mac port slated for July 3rd, with only a short wait for an iOS version on July 11.

OpenFeint Founder Tells All About His New iPad Exclusive Game, Fates Forever

By

FF_Left_Logo

Jason Citron is a veteran of both the console and gaming space, involved with developing Double Fine’s Brutal Legend in 2006, and then releasing one of the first hit iOS games in the early, heady days of the iOS App store, a match-three puzzle game with a twist, Aurora Feint. Soon after, he created OpenFeint, which was the de facto leaderboard and multiplayer matching system for Apple mobile devices long before Game Center.

After OpenFeint was sold to Japanese social-gaming company, GREE, in April of 2011, Jason headed out to engage his passion for video game development once again with a new company, Hammer & Chisel, and a new game, announced today, called Fates Forever, an iPad-only massively online battle arena (MOBA) game.

Citron took some time out of a busy schedule to talk to Cult of Mac about the new game, it’s mechanics and business strategy, and his own take on what iPad games should be.

Take Over The World From Your Mac To An iPhone Or iPad With Conquist 2 [OS X Tips]

By

Conquist 2

I’m a long time Risk player, with a penchant for grabbing up Australia or South America first, then blockading the heck out of them while I focus my expansion to the rest of the map from these well-fortified positions.

While there is a fantastic Risk game for the iPhone, there’s not one for the Mac, let alone one that plays on both platforms. Checking out Conquist 2, then, a Risk-style conquer the world game, seems like a no brainer, since you can purchase it for Mac and/or iOS, making it the perfect cross platform multiplayer game for fans of Risk.

Check it out.

Challenge Your Friends And Enemies With Free iOS Game, Star Trek Rivals

By

STCB_Wallpapers_Enterprise_1920x1080

Like an odd cross between Sudoku and a collectible card game, Star Trek Rivals, from Elephant Mouse Games, is out for iOS on the App Store to capture your attention today, on the release date of Star Trek: Into Darkness (have you gotten your tickets, yet?).

The game is free, has all your Star Trek reboot characters in it, and is pretty simple to learn, but hard to master. It plays asynchronously, and you can play a bunch of games at once. Did I mention it’s made out of Star Trek? What’s not to like?

Heroes And Castles Gets Huge Update With New Campaigns, Cartography, And Characters

By

That troll looks grumpy.
That troll looks grumpy.

Heroes and Castles, Foursaken Media’s mix of a third-person shooter with the castle defense genre, is a heck of a lot of fun to play, and today the iOS game has gotten a big old update, with a ton of great stuff to extend the fun, possibly enticing new players to try it out as well.

There are three new characters to play and level up: a stealthy (and free) Assassin, a natural-magic Druid, and a brawny Barbarian character. You’ll be able to put each through their paces in a brand new single player campaign, available as an unlock upon completion of the original campaign, with an entirely new environment and a ton of new enemies to battle.

PlaneQuest Will Combine TableTop Miniatures And Tablets For Something Even Better Than Skylanders [Kickstarter]

By

post-224275-image-cf405498ba4726e5cbaadd41370d2d3b-jpg

When I hear about a game that uses miniature figurines with a videogame, I automatically think of Skylanders, Activision’s hit toy/video game that uses plastic creature figures placed on a special “portal of power” to use the creature’s special abilities in the videogame, on consoles and on iPad.

Sydney, Australia-based TableTop Interactive is going one step further to a fuller interactive experience, with mini-figurines reminiscent of tabletop games like Hero Clix or Warmachine, and gameplay that looks more like an action RPG like Diablo. The Kickstarter project is just getting started, with a £150,000 goal and 42 days left to get to it.

Smallworld 2 Aims To Be A Lot Bigger On Android, iPad, and Steam [Kickstarter]

Dwarves, wizards, and goblins, oh my!

Just one year after the launch of the analog land-grab board game, Small World, Days of Wonder released Small World for iPad, bringing the fantastically fun board game to the digital world. Soon after, the gaming company brought Ticket To Ride to the iOS platform, cementing its claim to best digital version of an actual board game, ever (ok, maybe that’s just me).

Secretly, however, Days of Wonder tasked a small group of developers with coming up with a bigger, better sequel to Small World. They’re now on Kickstarter, almost funded, and ready to bring the game to Android, iOS, and even Steam with the funds from the crowd-sourcing website.

Duck & Roll, A Rhythm Game For iOS Featuring Rock ‘N’ Roll Ducks, Is Now Free

By

We all gotta start somewhere.
We all gotta start somewhere.

You may have figured that the rhythm game genre was finished, what with nary a Rockband, Tap Tap Revenge, or Guitar Hero game to grace the App Store in recent months.

You’d have figured wrong, at least as far as the devs behind updated iOS game, Duck & Roll, are concerned. WildFactor released Duck and Roll last November at a premium price. We can only assume that after several price drops and price increases, they weren’t finding much success.

Luckily, free games can attract an audience. Even more luckily, this one is pretty darn fun.

The Blockheads Updates After 1000 Years Of Gameplay

By

post-219461-image-d9e89f85205785744e4eae13b91d9329-jpg

The Blockheads is a fantastic iOS game that captures so much of the Minecraft experience, it’s a must play for any but the most jaded of iOS gamers.

It updated today, with all sorts of great stuff. You can now warp in up to four players, twice the two previously available. My kids and I are gonna have a ton of fun with this one. You can find fish in the sea, craft a fishing rod to catch them, and hopefully not get eaten by sharks there, either. Also, there’s a way to make tin foil, which lets you roast those fish on a campfire, canceling out the most hunger possible in game. Or, you know, make a tin foil hat.

Relax With Sporos, A Brain-Boosting Puzzle Game With A Chillout Atmosphere

By

Calming, challenging, purty.
Calming, challenging, purty.

Sometimes, when Friday rolls around, it’s all we can do to relax. I like to play games on my iPhone and iPad to chill a bit at the end of a long work week. Today, I spent some time with brain-teasing puzzle game, Sporos. It’s got a gentle vibe, calming electronica music, and a ton of challenging puzzles to keep your brain meats engaged and your anxiety level low. I’m enjoying it, and you just might, too.

By

Ooh! Puzzly.
Ooh! Puzzly.

The sequel to classic puzzler/adventure game, The 7th Guest, is currently in development for iOS, Mac, Android, and Windows PC, according to Polygon, who spoke with Trilobyte Games’ co-founder, Charlie McHenry, today. The game should feature the atmospheric horror and clever puzzles that the series, which includes The 7th Guest and The 11th Hour, is known for. The 7th Guest 3 will be set in the Stauf Mansion, as well, and should be in real-time 3D, instead of that pre-rendered stuff of the past. Whew.

Lookin' and soundin' good in Real Racing 3.
Lookin' and soundin' good in Real Racing 3.

I’m sitting here using an amazing pair of headphones while I work: the SteelSeries Flux wired headset. Cult of Mac put these in our Awesome 2012 Advent Calendar this past holiday season, and for good reason. They’re superb headphones, very portable, easy on the ears, and have some great advanced features, like detachable cords and a second headphone jack on the headset itself to share your music with a friend.

Today, then, SteelSeries and EA announced the Real Racing 3 Gaming Headset, which is based on the very same Flux headset, to reproduce the racing sounds and over-the-top dub step soundtrack in Real Racing 3, released in the US App Store today, with much higher fidelity than any standard earbuds you might get from, say, Apple.

You had me at Space MMO.

By

Froggy love, anyone?
Froggy love, anyone?

If you’ve got a hankering for a Missile-Command-styled arcade action game on your iPhone or iPad without engaging any emulation or lame vector graphics, Ballpit Monster’s Frog Orbs might be the game for you. Plus, if you’re in the mood for some holiday-themed fun, you can grab a special Valentine’s heart hat for your frog, along with a staff shaped like, you guessed it, a heart.

Work On Your Zen Attitude With New iOS Puzzler, Interlocked

By

Soothing, isn't it?
Soothing, isn't it?

If you’ve ever played with a wooden puzzle in your local educational toys store, you’ll instantly understand Interlocked, a new iOS game from developer Armor Games (Kingdom Rush). It’s a fun little universal puzzle app for the low price of $0.99, and it should keep you gently entertained for some time to come.

The concept here is to rotate each group of interlocked wooden pieces, sliding each piece out in the right order to fully disassemble the puzzle. Once you’ve moved all the pieces off and away from each other, you get a new puzzle to rotate and solve. It’s very zen, and the whole thing reminds me a bit of Zen Bound, another rotating puzzle game with wooden sculptures and a gentle vibe.

Table Top Racing For iOS Just Might Make You A Racing Game Fan Again

By

This one looks super cool.
This one looks super cool.

I’ve got to be honest, I’ve never really gotten into racing games. I do enjoy a bit of Burnout Paradise action now and then, but for the most part, I tend to avoid games that are all about racing. Unless they have karts and cute little mascots, of course. And iOS racing games? They’re ok, but not really my go-to genre.

Today, though, the adrenaline-fueled, high octane trailer for Table Top Racing has me wondering if maybe I should give this one a try.

Playrise Digital announced the release today of it’s first iOS title right on the iTunes App Store, and it just might make you a fan of racing games again, too.

Defend Your Beer Tickets With Old School iOS Tower Defense Game

By

Ain't no school like the old school.
Ain't no school like the old school.

Now, when we say Old School, we’re talking about the 2003 movie starring Luke Wilson, Vince Vaughn, and Will Ferrell as three old dudes trying to recapture the joy of their frat-bound youth, to hilarious (and naked) effect. Hard to believe it’s been ten years since the movie came out, really. We’re also talking about a new tower defense game, also called Old School.

As the tenth anniversary of the film’s release is next month, it’s fitting that Canadian developer, Big Blue Bubble, should bring Old School to the iOS platform in collaboration with the film’s distributor, Paramount Pictures.
