Android’s share of the worldwide smartphone market increased yet again during the second quarter of 2013, while the iPhone suffered a slight dip, according to the latest figures from IDC. But Research Manager Ramon Llamas is confident that Apple’s smartphone will recapture more users later this year when the Cupertino company launches the iPhone 5S.

Vodafone U.K. has today announced that it will begin rolling out its new 4G network on August 29 — the same day rival O2 will launch its own 4G service. The company will reach 12 major cities across the country initially, with further expansion planned before the end of this year.

That means that by the end of this month, EE will no longer be the U.K.’s only 4G provider.

Poll Suggests Improvements To iPhone 5S Camera: Better Low-Light Pictures, Improved Focussing

By

what-we-want.jpg

There’s one safe prediction even prophecy-shy folks can make about the “next” iPhone: It will have a better camera.

But what does “better” mean these days? The 8MP photos from my iPhone 5 are more than big enough for editing, cropping and printing, so where does Apple go with the iPhone 5S?

If it listens to the biased opinions of the nerds who participated in DIY Photography’s latest poll, then the answer is not “more megapixels” but “better low-light performance.”

iPad 5’s Rear Panel Gets First Hands-On

By

ipad-5-panel

The fifth-generation iPad is expected to adopt a whole new form factor, much like that of the iPad mini’s, only bigger. And proof of that comes with this leaked rear panel that has surfaced in China. Although the new model will have the same 9.7-inch Retina display as the existing iPad, this panel proves it will be significantly thinner, and narrower, with thinner bezels down the sides of its display.

Foxconn is looking to add another 90,000 people to its workforce as it prepares to take on mass production of the iPhone 5S, Focus Taiwan reports. The Taiwanese publication, citing sources in Apple’s supply chain, claims Foxconn has already completed testing assembly of the next-generation device, and is now gearing up to fill the “massive orders from Apple.”

Leaked Apple Packaging Points To Budget iPhone Being Called ‘iPhone 5C’ [Rumor]

By

iPhone 5C packaging

The above photo shows what is allegedly Apple packaging for an unreleased “iPhone 5C.” The packaging comes from the supply chain overseas and was first posted on the Chinese forum WeiPhone. It’s important to note up front that there is no way of confirming the packaging’s authenticity, but if it’s real, it has most likely revealed the name for the rumored budget iPhone.

The Budget iPhone May Actually Just Be A Plastic iPhone 5 In Different Colors [Rumor]

By

Since the beginning of this year, reports have been saying that Apple is working on a cheaper, ‘budget’ iPhone. In the last several months, we’ve seen part leaks and more info point towards Apple releasing the plastic-enclosed device this fall alongside the flagship iPhone 5S.

Apple has always dropped the price on the previous iPhone model by $100 when a new one comes out, but that business model hasn’t been able to help the company grow in emerging markets around the world. The budget iPhone is expected to cost around $300 unsubsidized, which would unlock a whole new market of potential customers.

There has never been two independent iPhone lineups at once, so introducing a totally separate model would be a big move for Apple. But what if the multi-colored, plastic iPhone everyone expects is just a retooled version of the current iPhone 5?

Why Apple Needs A Low-Cost iPhone More Than Ever

By

Low-Cost-iPhone-concept-photo-5

Since Apple launched the iPhone in 2007, smartphones have really taken off , and more than 1 billion people worldwide now own one. Last year alone, smartphones generated $293.9 billion in sales, but the cost of the average smartphone has begun falling.

More than half of cellphone owners in the U.S. and other developed markets already own a smartphone, and those in emerging markets such as China and India aren’t able to pay for high-end devices like the iPhone. As a result, cheaper options are becoming increasingly popular.

Was iOS 7’s Lock Screen Redesigned For The iPhone 5S’s Fingerprint Sensor?

By

iphone-fingerprint

Here’s an interesting patent. While hype and rumor has suggested that when Apple introduces a fingerprint sensor in the iPhone 5S, it’ll be placed under the home button, Apple’s actually patented something much different: technology that would allow an iPhone to detect your fingerprint just by pressing your finger against the screen.

This makes a lot of sense. Not only is it a more elegant place to put a fingerprint sensor — and Apple loves elegance — but it explains the redesigned iOS 7 lock screen, and the way ‘Slide to Unlock’ has been de-emphasized. We’ll see!

Alleged iPhone 5S Batteries Pictured On Assembly Line

By

iPhone-5S-batteries-small

An image of what is claimed to be a bunch of new batteries for the iPhone 5S on an assembly line has surfaced today. If it is genuine, it confirms the iPhone 5S will be battery-powered like its predecessors, and it debunks rumors that have claimed Apple will turn to more traditional energy means such as coal and paraffin.

This Might Be The First Photo Of The iPhone 5S Display On An Assembly Line

By

G4Games has posted a photo from the Chinese blogging site Weibo which allegedly shows the iPhone 5S front display on an assembly line.

We’ve seen a few pictures of the iPhone 5S front display, but until now, no one has seen these parts actually on an assembly line.

While the pictures are surely a sign Apple is making progress on the manufacturing end of the iPhone 5S, that does not guarantee iPhone 5S launch is coming within the next few weeks. It takes months of lead time to make enough iPhones for a launch, so we have no reason to expect an earlier iPhone launch than the currently rumored timeframe of this Fall.

Apple Significantly Reducing iPhone Orders For The Remainder Of 2013 [Analyst]

iPhone 6 maker Foxconn is looking to lower its reliance on Apple.
iPhone 6 maker Foxconn is looking to lower its reliance on Apple.

Apple is reportedly reducing its iPhone orders for the remainder of 2013, according to supply chain checks carried out by analyst Peter Misek. Orders for July-September has been significantly slashed from 40-45 million units to 25-30 million units, while Apple’s holiday quarter build plans have fallen from 55-60 million units to 50-55 million units.

Leaked Front Assembly Of The iPhone 5S Shows It’s Just As Pretty As The iPhone 5

By

IMG_9026

This is probably the front assembly of the iPhone 5S. Sadly, it looks pretty much the same as the iPhone 5, which is to be expected: the iPhone 5S is anticipated to be an incremental release over the iPhone 5, sharing the same look as the previous generation device just like the iPhone 4S and iPhone 3GS before it.

So nothing to be excited about? It’s hard to tell, but we have yet to see the home button array for the iPhone 5S, and that’s where rumor has all the new hardware in the next-gen iPhone going: namely, a fingerprint sensor under the home button which lets you lock out anyone who isn’t you… or who has cut off your finger.

These Could Be The Guts Of The iPhone 5S [Image]

By

iphone5spcb

Japanese part firms Mounantai has turned up three photos of what they’re emphatically claiming is the logic board for the iPhone 5S. There’s nothing soldered or plugged into this part, meaning no early peek at the iPhone 5S’s (presumed) A7 chip.

There’s not much to go on here, except that it looks like the iPhone 5S circuit board might be slightly narrower than that in the iPhone 5, and that while the iPhone 5S might just be a small speed-bump before the debut of the iPhone 6 next year, it’s still gotten a major overhaul on the inside.

Apple could add a third color option to its iPhone lineup this fall when the Cupertino company launches the iPhone 5S. According to a “trusted” source, the device will be available in gold as well as black and white, while the low-cost iPhone that will launch alongside it will be available in 5 different colors inspired by Apple’s iPhone 4 Bumper cases.

Reuters: Apple Considering Bigger iPhones With 4.7-Inch & 5.7-Inch Displays

By

While competing smartphone manufacturers are producing devices in a whole host of different sizes, Apple’s iPhone has had only two screen sizes in its six-year history. But according to four sources with knowledge of Apple’s plans, who have been speaking to Reuters, the Cupertino company is “considering” iPhones with 4.7-inch and 5.7-inch displays.

It is also said to be working on a cheaper iPhone that will come in a range of different colors.
