App Developers Double Dip By Charging For iOS 7 Updates

By

Would you pay for your favorite app more than once? App Store developers are betting that you will.

When Apple unleashes iOS 7 on September 18th, hundreds of thousands of apps will be revamped for the new operating system in the days and weeks to come.

Each major 1.0 release of iOS marks an opportunity for app developers to go back to the drawing board. And with its radically new design language and hundreds of new APIs, devs are seeing iOS 7 as not only a clean slate, but a chance to earn more money off their existing apps.

Apple’s new 64-bit A7 processor promises to make the iPhone 5s one of the fastest smartphones the world has ever seen, and with its launch day looming a mere four days away, Apple is making sure developers get their 64-bit apps submitted in time for launch.

A new note was posted in the Apple Developer Center this afternoon alerting developers that they can submit 64-bit apps for iOS 7 starting today:

Get Your iPhone Ready For iOS 7 – Make A Good Backup Today [iOS Tips]

iTunes Backup iOS

iOS 7 is coming this Wednesday, September 18, and it’s going to be a fairly simple upgrade. You’ll be able to just update your iOS device without any trouble, most likely over the air or by connecting to iTunes. No fuss, no muss.

However, you do most likely want to make a backup in case things go awry during the update process. Chances are you already have a backup if you use iCloud or iTunes, but here’s how to make a manual backup, just in case.

Instapaper 5 Is Ready For iOS 7

By

shot

iOS 7 is launching on Wednesday September 18th, and with it will come a whole slew of neat (and sometimes eye-searing) features. But what will there be for us poor bloggers and developers who have (maybe) been running the beta for so long now it doesn’t even seem new anymore? The answer is app updates. Lovely updates to some of our favorite apps to make them play nice with the new, clean OS. And the one of these will be Instapaper.

Use Drafts To Share Text Via AirDrop [iOS7]

By

airdrop drafts

Is there any end to the awesomeness of Drafts? The write-once-send-anywhere app for iOS has added a great new sharing feature for those using iOS 7, without developer Greg Pierce having to do anything. If you use AirDrop, you can send a chunk of text to anyone else with an AirDrop-capable device, even if they don’t have Drafts.

Scott Forstall & iOS 6 Morph Into Jony Ive & His iOS 7 Masterpiece [GIF]

By

scotandjony

In just a few short days, everyone’s iPhone is going to look a hell of a lot different now that Scott Forstall’s felt and wood grain reign is coming to an end. To celebrate rise of Sir Jony Ive’s flat and parallax world, GadgetLove created one of the most incredible iOS 6 vs iOS 7 comparison GIFs we’ve ever seen. The best part is staring at Forstall’s shrinking smile as Jony’s designer scowl quickly morphs in and out.

When I was a kid, my dad had a book of record covers called “The Album Cover Album.” It was a big, glossy coffee table book of the classic LP covers from the 50s to the 70s.

My brothers and I spent hours copying the trippy Grateful Dead covers by artist Rick Griffin or making paper models of the San Francisco Victorians on Jefferson Airplane’s “After Bathing at Baxter’s.”

Growing up in Britain in the 70s, at the height of Two Tone and punk, everyone was music mad. Music was everywhere. It determined how we dressed (as punks), where we went (punk concerts) and who our friends were (other punks). Culture rotated around music.

These days, culture is defined not by music, but technology. The bull’s-eye logo of The Who has been replaced by the Angry Birds icon. The cover of “London Calling” is the cosmic wallpaper on your iPhone.

Apple’s iOS 7 is a big step forward in that evolution. Gone forever are the vestiges of interfaces of old; the skeuomorphic references to desktops, trashcans, leather and wood. iOS 7 is another step towards interfaces of the future. And with 500 million almost-overnight downloads, it’s going to be everywhere.

For me, one of the most interesting things about iOS 7 will be watching it bleed out into the wider culture. Just as the iPod launched a million gadgets in white plastic, iOS 7 will inspire countless website redesigns and scores of apps with minimalist interfaces. We’ll see lots more of that fashionably slim Helvetica Neue font and transparent tickers on TV shows.

Earlier this year I talked to Professor Andrew Hargadon, a design and innovation professor at University of California at Davis. Hargadon told me that when the iPod came out, it showed everyone what a good MP3 player should look like. Likewise with the iPhone. Everyone hated their cell phones before the iPhone. Not any more.

“Nowadays, we expect many things to have better designs,” he told me. “Because of Apple, we got to compare crappy portable computers versus really nice ones, crappy phones versus really nice ones. We saw a before-and-after effect. Not over a generation, but within a few years. Suddenly 600 million people had a phone that put to shame the phone they used to have. That is a design education at work within our culture.”

I’m hoping that iOS 7 will also be a design education. I’m hoping it’ll inspire new DVR menus and the telemetrics system in my car. I’m hoping it’ll inspire my kids to make paper models of their favorite app icons.

They’re already fans of The Clash.

Apple Removes iCloud Keychain From iOS 7 GM

By

icloudkeychain

Apple seeded the iOS 7 GM to developers yesterday, and while it didn’t have any major new features – unless you cream your pants at the mention of new wallpapers and ringtones – Apple actually removed one of iOS 7’s most anticipated features from the beta: iCloud Keychain.

Every New Ringtone And Alert Tone In The iOS 7 GM [Video]

One of the few surprise announcements from yesterday’s keynote was that iOS 7 will come with a completely new set of ringtones and alert tones. That’s right, Marimba is finally in exile after annoying the living shit out of us for six long years.

The new ringtones and alert tones were included in the latest iOS 7 GM that was seeded to developers yesterday afternoon, and while Marimba and its old ringtone buddies are still available under the “Classics” options in iOS 7, the new ringtones and alert tones seem to fit better with the new iOS aesthetics.

You can listen to all the new ringtones in the video above, or check out the new alert tones in the video below:

Here Are All Of The Wallpapers In The iOS 7 GM [Gallery]

Apple released the iOS 7 GM to developers earlier today, and while the final version doesn’t have any major new features Apple did manage to toss a ton of new still and dynamic wallpapers into iOS 7, along with a completely new set of ringtones.

iOS 7 won’t be released until September 18th, but you can get your iPhone in the mood for all of Jony Ive’s upcoming changes by downloading the new wallpapers to your iPhone right now, thanks to our buddy Dom at MacMixing. Check them out:

Apple Pushes Developers To Submit iOS 7-Ready Apps Before Launch

By

iOS7gmseed

We finally have an official release date for iOS 7, which means on September 18th, everyone’s iPhone and iPad is going to change dramatically and a bunch of iOS 6 skeuomorphic apps are going to look like crap in Apple’s new flat, parallax world.

To make the transition to iOS 7 easier, Apple has sent an email out to developers reminding them to reimagine their apps’ interface to match iOS 7 and submit them before launch. Apple also published a new developer guides on how to take advantage of the iPhone 5s’ 64-bit A7 processor, M7 chip, and OpenGL ES 3 capabilities.

Apple Releases iOS 7 GM To Developers Ahead Of Public Launch Next Week

By

Screen Shot 2013-09-10 at 3.23.11 PM

After announcing that iOS 7 will ship to the public on Wednesday, September 18th, Apple has released the Golden Master version to developers.

iOS 7 has undergone 7 betas since its initial unveiling in June at WWDC, and today’s GM version marks the final iteration. The GM has historically been the same build Apple releases to everyone. Apple releases a GM to developers only in advance of the public release to allow time for final compatibility testing with apps in the App Store.

We’ll let you know what, if anything, has changed in the GM.

By

At today’s Apple event it was announced that iOS 7 will be officially released to the public next week on Wednesday, September 18th. The download will be free for everyone, and it will be available on iPhone and iPad, despite rumors that the iPad version would be delayed until October.

Compatible devices are iPhone 4 and up, iPad 2 and up, and the 5th gen iPod touch.

iOS 7 was originally previewed at WWDC in June, and the software has undergone several betas throughout the summer. A final developer GM is expected to drop before the public release next week.

One Year Later, 92% Of iDevice Owners Are Running iOS 6 [Chart]

With Apple set to unveil new iPhones today, we’re probably about a week away from a widescale release of iOS 7, which will mean that Apple’s seventh-generation operating system will end up dropping about a year after iOS 6. So 365 days later, how is iOS 6 doing?

Really well. In fact, according to data released by Chitika Insights, really well: it’s installed on 92% of all iOS devices.

What To Expect From Apple’s September 10 iPhone Event

By

Apple Sept 10 invite

Apple’s first major product event of the year is set to take place on Tuesday, September 10th. There was WWDC in June, but this time around will be all about the iPhone, Apple’s crown jewel.

The event will be held in Apple’s Town Hall auditorium at its Cupertino headquarters, which is a venue that was last used for the debut of the iPhone 4S in 2011. The iPhone 5S is expected this year, and like the 4S was to the 4, the device will look nearly identical to the iPhone 5 and focus on internal improvements. For the first time in Apple’s history, the rumor mill is predicting the unveiling of not one, but two new iPhone models at once, with the second being the iPhone 5C.

Here’s everything to expect from Apple’s September 10th iPhone event:

Alleged Blue iPhone 5C Gets Powered-On In New Video

By

blueiPhone5C

We’re nearly 24 hours away from Apple’s iPhone keynote, but a new video just hit the web that shows what Apple’s budget iPhone looks like when in operation. A video posted by C Technology shows an alleged blue iPhone 5C powered-on before going through a quick tour of iOS 7.

While the short video doesn’t show many details of the device, it does look consistent with some of the other leaks we’ve seen, and could indicate that the iPhone 5C will be ready to ship shortly after tomorrow’s keynote.

Animated GIF Shows New iOS 7-Ready App Store Icons

By

ios7-6-ikony

If you’ve been running the iOS 7 beta, or have seen it up close, then you’ll be familiar with the ugly icon problem, in which some icons have janky edges thanks to a change of the corner radius in iOS 7. You can see the changes in this animated GIF from Czech site Letem Světem Applem (or something), which shows the design change as applied to the icons in the iTunes Store.

Jailbreaking Gets Back In The Game With iOS 7

By

Cydia-iPhone-5

In the final months leading up to the next major iOS release, there’s barely enough activity on the jailbreak front to fill a couple of conference rooms. But with the public release of iOS 7 just around the corner, it’s like the calm before the storm as hackers gear up for what may be the toughest system to crack yet.

Developers, hackers, and hardcore fans gathered in late August at JailbreakCon in New York City, an annual summit for the meeting of the minds within the jailbreak community. And while the conference’s founder, Craig Fox, wasn’t “overly pleased” with attendance for the third edition, he still considers the event a success. Why? It fulfilled its mission.

For the past few years, JailbreakCon has played a crucial role in providing face time to code jockeys from different continents who would otherwise only know each other by Twitter handles. Friendships are formed and ideas are shared. This year was no different. And as the release of iOS 7 draws near, jailbreaking’s closely-knit group of hackers and developers is getting back in the game.

PayPal App For iOS Gets iOS 7-Styled Redesign And New Mobile Wallet Features

By

paypalappuodate

PayPal announced a major update for its iOS app today that includes a new iOS 7-styled redesign focused on giving users more options to use digital payments at brick and mortar locations.

The update allows customers to pay for items in-store, transfer money to friends, split bills, check-in to locations, and even open up a line of credit with the new Bill Me Later feature. PayPal is also working with restaurants to allow users to order and pay for items within the PayPal app, rather than having to download a separate app for all your favorite restaurants.

The new update will be available for free on Google Play and the App Store later today.

Here’s an intro video PayPal released for the redesign: :

CopyDock Gives You The iOS 7 Dock In iOS 6 [Jailbreak]

By

copydockbanner

iOS 7 isn’t for everyone. With its brightly-colored, flat candy chiclet design, it’s an update that many people are going to find jarring after playing in Scott Forstall’s skeuomorphic playground for so long. In fact, given how polarizing iOS 7 is, I imagine some long-time iOS users might decide not to come along for the ride at all.

Even if you hate iOS 7, though, there are some elements to love. For example, the new dock. Sure, functionally, it’s exactly the same, but the frosty two-dimensional glass looks just so much better than the faux-3D nonsense that was going on before.

Enter CopyDock. For jailbroken iDevice owners, CopyDock strips out the iOS 6 dock and replaces it with the iOS 7 dock. Simple, beautiful, and free. You can find it in the BigBoss repo on Cydia. Now how about bringing Control Center to iOS 6, jailbreak devs?
