The Apple-branded sneakers given to employees in the early 1990s have become collectors’ items priced well out of the range of ordinary consumers.

But two companies known for making cutting-edge footwear have come together to create shoes reminiscent of Apple’s original that can be purchased today.

These days, the term “Apple wearable” immediately makes you think of the Apple Watch. But back in the 1990s, Apple created sneakers that carried the company’s rainbow-colored logo.

Jump forward a quarter century, and Versace’s head sneaker designer just posted an image on Instagram that bears a striking resemblance to Apple’s sneakers. Check it out.

Do you hate going outside without anything on your feet? Happen to have a spare $30,000 sloshing around? Then you could be the lucky owner of an incredibly rare pair of authentic 1990s Apple sneakers, going up for auction this weekend.

Part of a Beverly Hills auction titled “The Future is Now” by Heritage Auctions, the shoes will be sold off on June 11, alongside an assortment of “sneakers, surfboards, skateboard decks and street art.”

Nike is re-releasing the Zvezdochka, a line of space-inspired sneakers first designed for the company 10 years ago by Marc Newson, Jony Ive’s BFF and Apple’s newest star designer.

Notice anything about them? Yup. They look just like the iPhone 5c case. Got to make you wonder if the iPhone 5c case was designed by Newson, don’t you think?

Apple co-founder Steve Jobs was rarely seen with anything other than sneakers on his feet — except in the early 1970s when he went everywhere barefoot — and so it’s hardly surprising that at some point the Cupertino company was producing sneakers of its own. They weren’t on sale, though I’m sure they’d have been a hit, but they were issued to employees in the early 1990s.
