Apple is taking on “hundreds” of new engineers and supply-chain managers in China and Taiwan in an effort to speed up product development and offer a greater range of devices, The Wall Street Journal reports.

The Cupertino company has reportedly poached staff from HTC and other rival firms to create new teams in Shanghai and Taipei.

Apple Just ‘Snapped Up’ A Whole Lot Of Sapphire Displays [Rumor]

It's the rumor pretty much every Apple analysts and blogger in the world predicted for the last 8 months and everyone got it wrong.
It's the rumor pretty much every Apple analysts and blogger in the world predicted for the last 8 months and everyone got it wrong.

During an Ubuntu Town Hall Hangout on Wednesday, Canonical founder Mark Shuttleworth made some interesting comments regarding Apple’s sapphire displays.

“Apple just snapped up three year’s worth of the supply of sapphire screens from the company that we had engaged to make the screens for the [Ubuntu] Edge [smartphone],” he said.

For those unfamiliar with it, the Ubuntu Edge was a proposed “high concept” smartphone announced by Canonical on 22 July 2013. Canonical was seeking to crowdfund a production run of 40,000 units through Indiegogo, but the project was scrapped when fundraising was able to only raise $12,809,906 out of the $32 million goal needed to kickstart the project.

Sapphire glass was in the news again today, thanks to a jump in the share price of GT Advanced Technologies Inc. — the company which will reportedly manufacture the iPhone 6’s sapphire display.

With contrasting reports about sapphire’s advantages over Gorilla Glass, along with counter-reports from Gorilla Glass maker Corning, we figured the time was right to break down some of the questions about Apple’s latest wonder-material.

Are These The First Spyshots of the iPhone 6?

By

BgS_sMRCQAALjG3

The iPhone rumor mill has been in overdrive lately, but with the iPhone 6 launch not expect until later this Fall we weren’t expecting to see any pictures which makes this afternoon’s set of alleged iPhone 6 rear casings almost too delicious to believe.

A set of images of an alleged iPhone 6 hit Twitter this afternoon, originating from obscure account but have since been picked up by Sonny Dickson, the infamous leaker who revealed the iPhone 5 as well as a number of other Apple products.

The images feature a space gray and gold iPhone, both with an edge-to-edge display and a thinner profile. The rear casing also suggest Apple will ditch the two glass sections in the back – maybe finally utilizing their LiquidMetal tech for an antenna?

We can’t confirm if the images are genuine yet, but they still give you a pretty good idea just how beautiful a bigger screen iPhone will be.

Update: Looks like these photos are fake. At least there are more surprises to come.

iPhone 6 Might Feature A Bezel-Free Display [Rumor]

By

iPhone6

The Rumor: Xcode 6 hints that bigger iPhones are coming out soon thanks to its resizable iOS simulator tool.

The Verdict: It's only a matter of time. Apple rarely tells developers when a new product is coming out, but there's usually clues hiding out in new software dished to WWDC attendees every year. At this point, we're probably only 2-3 months away from the big iPhone 6 announcement. I wonder what other clues will be discovered before then.

The iPhone 6 is still many months away from launching but the rumor mill has sprayed a steady stream of rumors about Apple’s next handset, with the latest claiming Apple will ditch the iPhone’s bezel for an edge-to-edge display.

What If The iPhone 6 Was Inspired By Back To The Future?

iMessage, Facetime, Siri… what will Apple’s next innovation be? This video humorously speculates that for the iPhone 6, Apple might take a page from Emmett Brown’s book with the iFlux Capacitor, an app that will allow any car to travel back in time, take photos in another century, as well as let you send messages to yourself in the past and track the stock market of the future. The English ain’t great, but the humor is.

Even though it feels like the iPhone 5s just came out, the rumor mill is already churning out little bits on the iPhone 6: a supercharged camera, a bigger display and a ton of sapphire crystal glass.

A number of designers have presented both wacky and plausible mockups for what the iPhone 6 might look like, but our concept designer friend Federico Ciccarese just sent us his rendition of what the iPhone 6 might look like. While it doesn’t have any wild design changes, it still has my pockets lusting after a 4.7-inch iPhone 6.

How The iPhone 6’s Camera Will Get Supercharged [Rumor]

By

video_hero

Generally speaking, you can count on the latest iPhone to improve upon the camera of the model that preceded it. That means that when the iPhone 6 comes along, we can expect it to have a better camera than the iPhone 5s’s 8-megapixel camera with an f/2.2 aperture.

Now a new rumor suggests that Apple has already selected a supplier for the iPhone 6, which will have a 10-megapixel camera with a f/1.8 aperture. Moreover, it will replace the hybrid IR filter used on the iPhone 5s with a resin lens filter, which would allegedly result in clearer images.

Apple could open a sapphire glass manufacturing facility in Arizona as early as February, according to recently published correspondence between the company and state regulators.

Analyst Matt Margolis unearthed documents that mention the Mesa plant — described as “Project Cascade” — and note that it would be used to manufacturer “a critical new sub-component” for a future Apple product.

The iPhone 6 Could Feature Solar-Powered Sapphire Glass Display [Rumor]

By

iphone-solar-case2

If Apple sticks to pattern, the iPhone 6 will be unveiled in September this year, and it’ll be the first major redesign of the flagship smartphone since 2011. So what does Apple have in store for us this year?

Most rumors so far have focused on the possibility of a larger display size, but a new rumor suggests that there might be more that is new about the screen than that: not only might the iPhone 6 feature a sapphire glass display, but it could also charge just by being laid out in the sun.

Pegatron Could Manufacture Half Of iPhone 6 Handsets

By

Pegatron-factory

According to a new report, Taiwanese manufacturer Pegatron could be responsible for assembling as many as half of Apple’s next generation iPhone 6 units.

The company is currently assembling the iPhone 5c and iPad mini, but if this news is to believed (it does cite an unidentified source) Apple’s reliance on Pegatron will grow in 2014 — with a new plant planned in Shanghai satellite city Kunshan in anticipation of an iPhone 6 manufacturing deal.

Will An iPhablet Launch In May? [Rumor]

By

iphone-6-concept

We all know that the iPhone 6 will be thinner than the current model — Apple hasn’t released a major iteration of a product yet without making it at least a tiny bit svelter — but will it also be physically bigger? That’s the million dollar question, and a new rumor says ‘yes’, and that Apple may release a physically bigger iPhone as early as May.

Apple Spends $578 Million On Rumored Sapphire Glass Feature For iPhone 6

By

glasses

Practically everyone reading this will have heard the reports about the lengths Apple will go to in order to ensure that its products are on the cutting edge of industrial design.

Well, to those reports you can add the one which suggests that Apple recently paid a total of $578 million — more than half a billion dollars — to GT Advanced Technologies to speed up “the development of its next generation, large capacity ASF furnaces to deliver low cost, high volume manufacturing of sapphire material.”

This move is designed to help keep down the costs of the Sapphire Glass screen rumored to be featured as part of the iPhone 6 — along with a redesign and bigger display.

Here’s What A 4.8-inch Gold iPhone 6 Might Look Like [Gallery]

By

iphone6

We’ve barely had the iPhone 5s in our hands for more than a month, but is it too early to start dreaming up what the next iPhone will look like?

Recent rumors have claimed Apple will beef up the screen size on the next iPhone to 5-inch, so one of our favorite concept artist, Martin Hajek has released some new concept images of a golden iPhone 6 that sports a 4.8-inch screen by upgrading to an edge-to-edge display so that the size of the iPhone doesn’t get bigger as well.

The mockup is missing Apple’s fancy new Touch ID feature which will undoubtedly be available on the iPhone 6 and future iPhones, but the all-metal backing and thinner design would be excellent improvements to go along with a bigger display, even if you hate that its dipped in gold.

Here are a couple other looks at Martin’s gold iPhone 6 concept:

Meet The iPhone Air, Apple’s Lightest iPhone Yet [Concept]

By

002c

Apple’s design patterns are pretty much set at this point: every other year, they radically overhaul the look of the iPhone or iPad.

Next year’s iPhone 6, then, will be a major departure from the iPhone 5 and iPhone 5s, and designer Federico Ciccarese of Ciccarese Design has a good idea of what to expect: a slimmer device that looks a lot more like an iPad Air or iPad mini called (yup) the iPhone Air.

Experts Predict Larger 5-Inch Display For iPhone 6… Again

If you switched from an iPhone to an Android-powered smartphone because you felt a 4-inch display was just too small, then Apple may give you a reason to switch back next year. Several industry experts are predicting that the Cupertino company will step up its pursuit of high-end Android smartphones by finally introducing a larger 5-inch display with the iPhone 6.

Apple Will Finally Add A Larger 4.8-Inch Display To The iPhone 6 [Analyst]

By

iPhone-5s-flat

Yes, I know, Apple’s new iPhones have been on sale for just over two weeks, but industry watchers are already looking ahead to its successor. Traditionally, the biggest iPhone releases come every other year, so we expect the iPhone 6 to be a big improvement over the iPhone 5s — not just an incremental upgrade that adds a faster processor and an improved camera.

In addition to a new design, Jefferies analyst Peter Misek says the iPhone 6 will come with a larger 4.8-inch display that will satisfy critics and fans of larger phones.

This iPhone 6 Concept Looks Like Something From Battlestar Galactica

By

So say we all.
So say we all.

There have been some rumors of both an iPhone 5S and an iPhone 6 coming out this summer, and while I don’t hold out too much hope of that happening–it’s too far out of Apple’s established iPhone release rhythm–this iPhone 6 concept mockup is interesting, to say the least.

The folks at Designed by M, the makers of the AL13 case we reviewed back in May, decided to put together this rather unique take on a possible iPhone 6 design, with the cut-off corners of a piece of paper straight out of Battlestar Galactica.

Why? We’re not sure, but a blog post on the Designed by M website tells a bit more.
