By

The Chronic Dev Team are a wonderful and ingenious bunch of guys, but they aren’t exactly the most punctual of hackers. It’s common for it to take months for the latest version of iOS or the newest iDevice to be cracked. So when Chronic Dev Team member p0sixninja recently said that we were “weeks” away from an iPad 2 jailbreak, we were skeptical we’d actually see it anytime soon.

On the contrary, says the Chronic Dev Team. You can consider that a promise.

Foxconn Knew Ahead Of Time About The Dust That Caused iPad 2 Facility Explosion

By

Foxconn-iPad-Factory-Explosion-2011-a

The unexpected explosion that rocked Foxconn’s Chengdu facility on Friday killing three has been blamed upon a build up of combustible dust at the iPad 2 polishing plant. As a two-week old report on factory worker conditions makes clear, though, the dangers of allowing such dust to build-up has been brought to the attention of Foxconn and Apple before.

The iPad 2 already has phenomenal, 10-hour battery life, largely thanks to a combination of Apple’s custom-built, power-sipping A5 chip and the fact that inside, the iPad 2 is mostly battery.

Thanks to a new, cutting-edge tablet coating, though, your next iPad could run for twenty hours or more on a single charge, while providing Kindle-like outdoor readability.

‘Coyote’ and ‘Hollywood’ are the code-names of two tablets rumored to be a part of Amazon’s
upcoming tablet ‘family’. Details obtained from one tipster reveal the Coyote will boast a dual-core processor much like Apple’s iPad 2, whereas the Hollywood has something even more audacious up its sleeve: hardware that Amazon hopes will potentially make the iPad 3 obsolete even before it launches.

ModulR Updates Their Brilliant Modular Case System for the iPad 2

By

modulr

Just like their first kit for the original iPad, ModulR have released a case set of modular accessories for the iPad 2. At the heart of the system is a $40 iPad 2 case (with included hand strap) that features attachment points to which a whole slew of industrial-looking modular accessories can be attached, like a shoulder strap ($20) or a magnetic fridge mount ($15).

ModulR didn’t just resize the old set and slap it onto the iPad 2 — they say they’ve reworked it from the ground up, incorporating user feedback from the original set, resulting in a slimmer case and the ability to customize cases with a corporate logo. Which means it’s probably only a matter of time before a BMW ad features hard-hat wearing workers on the factory floor walking around with BMW-emblazoned iPads, right.

The iPad 2 came to China this morning and sold out in less than 4 hours, according to our friends at M.I.C. Gadget.

Apple’s flagship store in Beijing attracted a massive crowd of customers and scalpers, who started lining up at 5 p.m. on Thursday. Overnight customers were treated well: there was a special waiting room for them to sleep in, and everyone got a wristband, allowing them to leave the line for an hour and return to their place in line.

There was even a special section for scalpers, who set up shop behind a barrier. Here’s the details:

ColorWare is famous for taking gorgeous new gadgets and giving them a nice lick of paint. The company is now painting iPad 2s for those that don’t like the original look, but as usual you’ll pay a high price for a customized device.

Prices start at $900 for a 16GB Wi-Fi only iPad, which increases to $1,100 for the 64GB model. If you want a 3G capable device, prices start at $1,030 and rise to $1,230 for the 16GB and 64GB models respectively. Alternatively you can send in your own iPad and have it painted for $400.

It’s certainly not a cheap service, but ColorWare does a fantastic job of customizing your device. You can have the body, antenna, logo and home button painted in a variety of weird and wonderful colors; using either solid, metallic or pearl paint. You can also have your whole device coated in a soft touch finish for an additional $55.

Well, what are you waiting for?

Apple Launches ‘If You Asked’ Commercial for iPad 2

Apple has released a new commercial for its iPad 2 that follows the same theme as its previous ‘We Believe‘ commercial launched in early April. Entitled ‘If You Asked’, the new ad focuses on the iPad’s user experience and how people perceive the device rather than its technical specifications.

The smooth guy in the voiceover reads:

If you ask a parent, they might call it intuitive. If you ask a musician, they might call it inspiring. To a doctor, it’s groundbreaking. To a CEO, it’s powerful. To a teacher, it’s the future. If you ask a child, she might call it magic. And if you asked us, we’d say it’s just getting started.

Apple’s commercials for the second-generation iPad thus far have been a little more personal than the company’s other ad campaigns; highlighting what users can achieve with the device, rather that what the device itself is technically capable of.

It really is amazing that the iPad is being used in so many amazing ways by everyone from toddlers to CEOs.

iPad 2 to Launch in Japan on Thursday, April 28th

By

iPad

A new report from Nikkei Shimbun – the Japanese newspaper behind the iPhone 6 LCD rumors – claims the iPad 2 will finally launch in Japan on Thursday, April 28th. The second-generation tablet was delayed for over a month due to the earthquake and tsunami that recently devastated vast parts of the country.

Apple announced that it would be delaying the launch of the iPad 2 in Japan in the middle of March – stating its teams were focusing on recovering from the recent disaster – and the company is yet to release an update on the delay.

The iPad 2 was scheduled to launch in Japan on March 25th – the same day it hit 25 other countries, including Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Greece, Mexico, Norway and the U.K.

If Nikkei’s claims are accurate, the iPad 2 will launch in Japan just a day after the white iPhone 4 is released worldwide; a busy week for Apple, it seems.

Apple seems to be catching up with the demand of the iPad 2 after shipping times for orders from the Apple online store dropped to just 1-2 weeks last night. Those in the U.S. noticed the change first, but it slowly spread to every country in which the device is currently available.

Shortly after its launch, shipping times for the iPad 2 hit 4-5 weeks, but as Apple deals with demand and orders begin to tail off a little, shipping times have continued to slowly drop.

An update to Firemint’s Real Racing 2 HD game today sees the company introduce dual-screen gaming to the iPad 2 using the new Digital AV Adapter accessory. When hooked up to a HDTV, users can enjoy their race in 1080p on their TV, while their iPad displays an alternative image from the game – such as a map of the circuit – simultaneously.

The iPad continues to act as a controller, so you can control the car on your TV using the iPad’s gyroscope controls, as demonstrated in the video below.

iPad 2 Now on Sale at Toys ‘R’ Us

By

toys-r-us-banner.png

Just as expected, Toys ‘R’ Us has now joined the growing list of U.S. retailers to offer the iPad 2. The toy giant began advertising the second-generation tablet on Sunday, which is now available for purchase in selected stores. (If you can find stock.)

There is a list of stores now offering the iPad 2 available on the Toys ‘R’ Us website, and a leaked product sheet indicates the retailer will also offer the Smart Covers, Camera Connection Kit, and VGA Connector to accompany the device.

Toys ‘R’ Us joins Best Buy, Walmart, Target, AT&T and Verizon on the list of third-party stores to offer the iPad 2 as Apple’s retail expansion for the device continues to grow in the U.S.

Despite this, the device seems to be no easier to obtain – with stores continuing to sell out the day they receive their stock.
