There are many other development tools available besides the free copy of Xcode that comes with every Mac. LiveCode 5 (starts at $99; $49 for upgrades), a development tool running on Mac OS X and other operating systems from RunRev, gets it inspiration from the programming language HyperTalk. It is designed with an intuitive user interface to make application development easier using a language that uses an understandable English-like syntax. You can use it to create your own iOS apps.

Developer Realizes That He Can Cut App Prices And Not Lose Money In The App Store
The man behind the popular iA Writer app, Oliver Reichenstein, has posted some interesting observations on the App Store ecosystem. In a Google+ post titled “Revenue = X,” the founder of Information Architects explains how his decision to drop the price of iA Writer on the Mac and iPad has resulted in a way to “increase exposure without affecting profit.”
Dropping iA Writer’s price has resulted in more purchases than expected, and Oliver’s profits have largely stayed the same since he made his app cheaper.

Apple Kicks Security Researcher Out Of The App Store After iOS Exploit Demonstration
We told you a couple of hours ago about security guru Charlie Miller’s new iOS vulnerability that allows an approved App Store app to run unsigned code remotely. Miller has been hacking Apple’s products for years, and this most recent bug is a particularly nefarious exploit that could be used for all kinds of evil purposes.
Charlie Miller is one of the good guys, however, and he is planning to show his cards at the SysCan conference in Taiwan next week. The ends don’t always justify the means in this case, as Apple has now kicked Miller out of the App Store and iOS Developer Program.
Sandvox Web Editor: A Good iWeb Alternative [Review]
When Apple announced iCloud, it also announced the end of MobileMe web hosting.
If you’re among the small community of iWeb/MobileMe users who’ve been wondering what to do when MobileMe finally gets switched off next June, I suggest you take a look at Sandvox as one possible replacement.

You Can Jailbreak iOS 5 Beta 3, But You Won’t Be Able to Use the App Store
Apple may have just released iOS 5 Beta 3 today, but the Dev Team never rests, and the beta has already been jailbroken using the popular tool, RedSn0w. The mouse hasn’t exactly gotten the cat by the tail this time around, though. If you jailbreak iOS 5 Beta 3, prepare to give up all of your third-party App Store apps as punishment.

Here Is What’s New In The Latest Lion Update [Screenshots]
Here’s the handsome new login screen in the update to OS X Lion Developer Preview 4, that Apple released on Wednesday afternoon.
It’s a dark linen motif, and it’s used in several places in the Lion and iOS 5. We got sneak peek of this color scheme during Steve Jobs’ presentation at WWDC. Now it has been rolled out to developers, and soon to the public. Who’s excited?
Here’s screenshots of some other new stuff in the update (Build number 11A494A). Lion is shaping up nicely:

Microsoft Tries to Lure Developers with iOS to Windows Phone 7 Porting Tool
Microsoft is trying to lure iOS developers into creating applications for the Windows Phone 7 operating system by offering an API mapping tool which helps them port their applications over from the iPhone. Jean-Christophe Cimetiere, Microsoft’s Senior Technical Evangelist for Interoperability, unveiled the tool on the Windows Team blog:
With this tool, iPhone developers can grab their apps, pick out the iOS API calls, and quickly look up the equivalent classes, methods and notification events in WP7. A developer can search a given iOS API call and find the equivalent WP7 along with C# sample codes and API documentations for both platforms.
Included in the package along with the API mapping tool is a 90+ page guide entitled “Windows Phone 7 Guide for iPhone Application Developers;” a series of “developer stories” from devs who have already ported their iPhone apps over to Windows Phone 7; and a compilation of the key resources needed to get started.

Apple Releases Mac OS X 10 Lion Developer Preview 2 To Developers
Apple has released the next beta version of Mac OS X Lion. The new release dubbed Developer Preview 2 build number 11A419 is available to registered Mac OS X developers through the Mac App Store. Developers wishing to acquire this release must visit developer.apple.com and request a redemption code.
In addition to the above Apple has also made Mac OS X Lion Server Developer Preview 2 with the same 11A419 build number available. Both releases are accompanied by Xcode 4.1 Preview 2 which is the pre-release version of Apple’s Mac OS X development suite.

Xcode 4 Developer Preview Updated to Version 6
Apple has released the sixth developer preview of the forthcoming Xcode 4. The new update has been posted to Apple’s developer websites for Mac OS X and iOS. Primarily it offers iprofiler a new command-line tool along with a new framework for measuring application performance. It also wouldn’t be your typical Apple software update without additional enhancements and bug fixes from the previous version released last November.
The iprofiler command-line tool helps developers to measure an applications performance without having to launch the Instruments application. However, its output can be analyzed by Instruments later for a complete performance evaluation.
The new framework introduced in the update is called DTPerformanceSession and it allows an application to create performance measurements of itself or other applications.
Complete information about the Xcode 4 Preview 6 and a download link are available to registered Apple Developers through Apple’s Developer website.
iOS 4.1 Beta 2 Fixes iPhone 4 Proximity Sensor Issues
Apple appears to have fixed the widely-reported iPhone 4 proximity sensor issue in the latest iOS 4.1 beta 2 update.
The latest beta also includes a baseband update (AT&T 7.1), which seems to fix HSUPA upload speed issues, which slowed video and photo uploads to a crawl.
Despite reports to the contrary, our tests show that the proximity sensor issue appears to be have been fixed. (MacRumors says the issue hasn’t been addressed).
In numerous tests, I couldn’t get my iPhone 4 to hang up a call. Previously, the iPhone was plagued with proximity sensor issues. It would constantly hang up calls when I held the phone next to my cheek.
But after installing the iOS 4.1 beta 2 update this afternoon, I couldn’t force the iPhone to hang up calls when lifting it up to my face, no matter how hard I tried.
I stress that the issue only seems to have been fixed. I could of course be wrong. Apple hasn’t yet documented what is in the latest beta update.
