Really, Apple? The F**king Foo Fighters?!?!?! [Opinion]

By

grohl

Oh, Apple. Wasn’t it enough that you subjected us to John Mayer and Coldplay for years? I mean, yeah sure, I guess both of those artists were kind of cool for about 15 minutes, but they weren’t “cool” or “hip” when they played at an Apple keynote, and now instead of making progress with keynote live performances you give us the Foo Fighters?

Don’t get me wrong, I love Dave Grohl. The feisty Nirvana Dave Grohl, who talked shit to Axl Rose and had a wild and unruly nature about him. He was awesome back then. Apple-esque even, in that rebellious sort of way that, even though they’re the biggest tech company in the world, Apple still likes to cast themselves as the rebel going against the mainstream. But having the Foo Fighters play at an Apple event now seems contradictory to Apple’s entire hip and cool image that makes people lust after iPhones and iPads.

Along with the announcement of the iPhone 5, Apple has also posted its traditional promotional video, touting the iPhone’s new features. As is typical, Jony Ive is present, talking about the new design and the iPhone 5’s larger display. The video is up on Apple’s website now, but you can also view it here, just after the break.

You’re probably frothing at the mouth waiting for Apple to upload the video of today’s keynote, right? No? Good. Sitting through two hours of Apple talk is a pretty big commitment when you could do something better, like go outside, or play with a puppy, or eat.

Here’s Apple entire iPhone 5 keynote in pictures so you can still feel like you saw it all:

Does The iPhone 5 Feature Anything You Wish You Had On Your Android Device?

Apple released the iPhone 5 today, and while it put the majority of us to sleep, we can’t help but think there HAS to be at least one feature of the iPhone 5 that you wish you had. Yes, I realize we already have over 90% of them already, but what about its PPI? There has to be something? I’ve put together a poll with a few of the possibilities, so put in your vote, and if there’s something else you can think of, throw it in the comments.

Apple Awakens From Cryogenic Sleep, Finally Catches Up With The Rest Of The Mobile Industry

By

post-190334-image-5ce4703911d1b433bcec7e1428681684-jpg

Man, oh man. At least now we know why Apple has been on such a legal crusade. They’ve got nothin’. I just finished watching the iPhone 5 unveiling and boy was it a bore fest. It’s as if Apple awoke from a cryogenic sleep and is finally embracing the year 2012. Almost nothing was innovating and the majority of new iPhone 5 features have been implemented in other mobile phones for years. Seriously Apple, is that it?

Apple’s Phil Schiller: Passbook Doesn’t Need NFC, Lightning Dock Is Here To Stay

By

Phil Schiller unveiled the iPhone 5 to the world earlier today.
Phil Schiller unveiled the iPhone 5 to the world earlier today.

One of the glaring omissions in Apple’s iPhone 5 keynote was any mention of NFC. The rumor mill had suggested that the iPhone 5 would come with NFC (Near Field Communications) tech for mobile payments, but the rumor ended up getting squashed in the weeks leading up to today’s event.

So why no NFC in the iPhone 5? According to Apple VP of Worldwide Marketing Phil Schiller, Passbook in iOS 6 is enough for what Apple wants to accomplish in the virtual wallet space right now. In a brief interview today, Schiller talked about NFC, and why Apple decided on the new Lightning dock connector.

The iPhone 5 Has Separate GSM and CDMA Versions, So Prepare To Stay Loyal To Your Carrier

By

Screen Shot 2012-09-12 at 5.04.14 PM

One of the best things about the iPhone 4S was that it rolled GSM and CDMA into the same baseband. What that means is if you have, say, an AT&T iPhone, it could technically run on Verizon as long as you unlocked it. Likewise, if you had a Verizon iPhone, you could just slap in a GSM pay-as-you-go SIM card if you were traveling in any other country in the world to avoid exorbitant international roaming fees.

With the iPhone 5, though, things are changing. There will be two versions of the iPhone 5, a separate device for both GSM and CDMA carriers. Why? Seems to all be about LTE.

Apple’s keynote today was long and packed with new products and software. There was a lot of stuff to love, and even somethings that were completely boring. What product are you most excited about that Apple announced today, other than the iPhone 5?

The new iPod Nanos look great, and the iPod Touch is just another reason why digicams are toast. And oh hey, there was that lanyard thing that comes with the iPod Touch that looks really dorky, but I’m sure people might really like it. What are you stoked for? Come chat with us in the forums about all the new stuff you’re excited to play with.

You Won’t Lose Your AT&T Grandfathered Unlimited Data Plan When You Upgrade To The iPhone 5

By

att-sign-28

The future of unlimited data on AT&T and Verizon doesn’t look promising, but potential iPhone 5 owners with grandfathered unlimited data plans on AT&T can rest easy. AT&T today confirmed that it will allow grandfathered customers with unlimited data to keep their plans when upgrading to the iPhone 5.

Unlike Verizon, AT&T will let its customers keep unlimited data if they buy a subsidized or unsubsidized iPhone 5. Verizon requires that customers pay the full, unsubsidized price of the device to keep unlimited data.

What Does The New iPhone 5 and iPod touch Screen Mean For iOS Gaming? [Opinion]

Extra space for rear-view mirrors!
Extra space for rear-view mirrors!

The iPhone 5 and the iPot touch both got a revamp today, as announced at the Yerba Buena center in San Francisco. They both have a new look and a new screen size. The 4 inch diagonal screen is at the same ratio of 16:9 as most HD movies, for one. But what about gaming? Everyone knows how great iOS is for gaming, right? What will the extra length bring to the party? Let’s take a look.

Apple’s Going To Charge You $30 So Your iPhone 5 Can Play With Old Accessories

By

30pinadapter

We figured that Apple was going to charge a stupid amount of money for the Lightning to 30-pin Adapter. We were thinking somewhere between $15-$20, but turns out Apple is going to charge 30 bucks just so your iPhone 5 can have fun with all your old accessories.

It feels like extortion, but maybe the production cost of the adapter is pretty high. Maybe Apple’s charging so much because they don’t want you to buy it so you’ll buy new accessories and cables instead so they’ll make even more money. Maybe we’re overreacting. Who knows?

By

panorama iPhone 5

From Kodak brownie cameras to a high-resolution smartphone camera in every pocket, the current internet age has produced a vertical fuck load of image data, all filtering through social networks like Instagram or Facebook, not to mention Flickr and Picasa.

Let’s not overlook one detail in today’s iPhone 5 launch: the Panorama.

Like most of the iPhone 5, the new camera is a solid evolution rather than the big jump we saw in the earlier iPhones. It keeps the same ƒ2.4 lens aperture as the iPhone 4S and the same great 8MP sensor, but some tweaks to the lens, the new Lightning connector and the new A6 processor all make the iPhone 5 into the perfect new phone for photographers.

Apple Announces New Photo Stream Social Networking Options In iOS 6 [iPhone 5 Event]

By

iPhone5_0447

This seems new: Apple just announced that in iOS 6, you’ll be able to share photos through Photo Stream with friends, and when you share, you can comment on the photos, have your friends comment on photos and even like photos, with all changes pushed to you by notification. It looks like Facebook integration into Photo Stream, but Apple’s not calling it that. Is this Apple getting into the photography social networking game?

Also, Apple’s right. Alex Heath is a slob. Someone get that poor hobo a clean shirt.

The iPhone 5 Got Killer Audio Upgrades Too [iPhone 5 Event]

By

iphone-5_065

The iPhone 5’s improvements aren’t all visual though. It’s also got a bitching new audio system.

First of all, the new iPhone has three microphones, at the front back and bottom. That gives much better voice clarity.

Speakers have five magnet transducers, which is up from three.

And the earpiece? Built in noise canceling of your own audio out. That’s actually super impressive.

These are the silent killer upgrades. Expect the iPhone 5 to be the best sounding smartphone in the world.

iPhone 5 Camera Upgrade Includes 8 Megapixel Sensor, Panorama, 720P FaceTime Video [iPhone 5 Event]

By

iphone-5_053

Apple today unveiled the new improvements in the iPhone 5’s camera. The iPhone 5 features multiple enhancements in what Apple is calling the “iSight” department. The device’s 8 megapixel sensor will shoot pics at a 3264×2448 resolution, and the camera includes a Hybrid IR filter and next-gen ISP technology. Schiller noted that the camera itself is 25% smaller.

In iOS 6 the Camera app will include a Panorama mode for taking large landscape pictures, and Shared Photo Streams will give users the ability to effortlessly share pics with friends and family on the go.

For video, the iPhone 5 shoots rear-facing 1080p video like the iPhone 4S. The front-facing camera now shoots 720p video for FaceTime, which is a nice improvement.

“It’s a huge jump in performance, but 22% smaller,” noted Schiller.

Per tradition, Apple invited EA onstage to demo the upcoming Real Racing 3 game on the iPhone 5’s A6 chip. EA explained how the A6 allows for “”full console quality” gaming on a mobile device.
