Eagle-eyed Redditors noticed that Apple set the launch trailer videos for the iPhone 11 and iPhone 11 Pro to private on YouTube, likely in preparation for this year’s upcoming iPhones.
Potential iPhone 12 buyers want faster 5G and a smaller design
A survey of current iPhone users found that 41% of them intend to upgrade to the iPhone 12 when it’s released this autumn.
What’s drawing in potential buyers the most is a faster connection via 5G. And there’s plenty of interest in the tiny 5.4-inch model. But survey respondents aren’t much interested in another rumored feature of the iPhone 12: a LiDAR scanner for augmented reality.
How to see the AR easter egg hidden in Apple’s Sept. 15 event invite
Hidden in Tuesday’s invite to the September Apple event is a clue that might confirm rumors that the company will make a major push into augmented reality.
The graphic for the invite is an apple sketched out with blue swirls. iPhone and iPad users can put that design in motion, with it seemingly appearing in the real world.
Apple preps virtual event for Sept. 15, but don’t expect iPhone 12
Apple’s next virtual event will take place on September 15 — but don’t expect to see the new iPhone 12 models.
The big announcements for the “Time Flies” event that Apple announced Tuesday will likely be the new Apple Watch and iPad. The Apple Watch Series 6 could feature blood-oxygen tracking. Meanwhile, the iPad Air 4 could borrow a design from the iPad Pro — but retain Touch ID.
6.1-inch iPhone 12 models could arrive before the others
This year’s iPhones will arrive in two waves, a report published Monday claims. According to Digitimes, the initial iPhone 12 units will be the 6.1-inch iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro. After that, the 5.4-inch iPhone 12 and 6.7-inch iPhone 12 Pro will both ship together.
Concept video shows just how tiny iPhone 12 might be
Apple is supposedly prepping an iPhone with a screen that’s just 5.4 inches. A concept artist created a video that effectively demonstrates exactly how small that “iPhone 12 mini” will be.
Watch it now to see the rumored handset absolutely dwarfed by a 2020 iPhone SE.
Report claims only a single iPhone 12 variant will offer fastest 5G
Those who plan to upgrade to iPhone 12 for its 5G connectivity may need to be careful about which variant they choose this fall. A new report claims only one will offer the fastest 5G technology.
While all iPhone 12 units are said to feature Sub-6 5G capabilities, one source claims you’ll need to opt for the largest, most expensive model to also enjoy faster mmWave 5G.
Reliable leaker says new Apple Watch won’t land in September
Apple Watch’s next big refresh won’t land in September as recent reports have predicted, according to one reliable leaker. Fans could be waiting until October or November instead.
It is believed the iPhone 12 lineup will also launch later than usual this year as a result of production delays from COVID-19.
Supposed iPhone 12 Pro glass panel makes way for new LiDAR Scanner
A new glass panel, supposedly destined for iPhone 12 Pro, might reveal the location of the handset’s new LiDAR Scanner.
In the image, shared Tuesday on Twitter by leaker Mr·white, an additional hole appears alongside the three camera cutouts in the top corner of the panel. Unlike all the other holes, which are left wide open, this one has a dark covering like that on the 2020 iPad Pro.
Sources affirm plans for new iPad Air, 2 Apple Watch models this fall
Sources familiar with Apple’s plans have confirmed to Bloomberg that a new iPad Air and Apple Watch refresh are on their way this fall.
The unnamed insiders corroborate recent leaks that indicate the new iPad Air will have an edge-to-edge display, like iPad Pro. The new Apple Watch is expected to come in two very different variants.
ARM iMac with custom Apple GPU could arrive in second half of 2021
A brand-new iMac, powered by Apple Silicon combined with a custom Apple GPU, will land during the second half of 2021, according to a new report.
Codenamed “Lifuka,” the all-in-one is expected to use 5-nanometer chips manufactured by Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company — like those destined for iPhone 12 and other Apple Silicon machines later this year.
Delayed iPhone 12 launch could take a chunk out of 2020 sales
The next-generation iPhone won’t launch in September, and market researchers predict the delay will cut significantly into sales of the smartphone.
But, as crazy as 2020 has been so far, there are still plenty of wild cards — including a possible dark blue iPhone color option — that could affect sales numbers.
New leak confirms some of the most exciting iPhone 12 specs
New images and video of a prototype iPhone 12 Pro Max allegedly fell into the hands of frequent Apple leaker Jon Prosser. This allows him to reveal that Apple’s next handset will have thinner bezels — but the notch isn’t shrinking.
He also served up details Tuesday on the upcoming iPhone’s camera that add weight to numerous earlier leaks. That includes a higher video recording rate, a Lidar sensor and more.
Here’s how much 5G components will reportedly cost Apple
The addition of 5G connectivity is one of the most compelling elements of this year’s iPhone 12, but it’s going to come at a cost to Apple. Literally.
According to a new report by TF Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple will likely pay $75 per unit for sub-6GHz 5G support, and a maximum of $125 for mmWave 5G. However, Kuo does not think Apple will pass these costs on to the end consumer.
Apple manufacturer will start building iPhone 12 and iPhone SE in India
Apple manufacturer Wistron will reportedly build iPhone 12 models in India, although production will only begin in mid-2021. These handsets will reportedly be manufactured at the company’s Narsapura plant and be aimed at the local market.
The same report, from Business Standard, says that Wistron will also begin manufacturing the 2020 iPhone SE models by the end of this year.

iPhone 12 lens-maker denies reports of camera problems
Yujingguang, a.k.a Genius Electronic Optical, has denied that there are problems with the iPhone 12 camera lenses.
TF International Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo previously suggested that some of the coatings for the wide-angle lens produced by the company had cracked during a high-pressure, high-humidity stress test by Apple.
However, Genius maintains that its production is running without issues. It also said that demand from its “brand handset clients” (which reportedly include Apple) remain normal.
We might know exactly when iPhone 12 will arrive
Apple will hold an iPhone 12 event the week of October 12, with the device shipping a week later, according to up-and-coming leaker Jon Prosser. The iPhone 12 Pro would land the following month, he said.
Without citing a source (obviously), he tweeted his “new, adjusted Apple dates” Wednesday afternoon.
iPhone 12 camera problem might have an upside for Apple
Apple reportedly encountered a problem with some of the camera lenses it plans to use for the iPhone 12. Specifically, some of the coatings for the wide-angle lens cracked during a high-pressure, high-humidity stress test, according to TF International Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo.
While that might not sound great, there’s actually no reason to panic. And the supply-chain problem might even wind up saving Apple a few bucks.
Leaked iPhone 12 display shows the notch isn’t shrinking
A supposed image of the iPhone 12 display hardware shows that the screen cutout in the upcoming handset remains the same size as in its predecessors.
Earlier this year, we heard unconfirmed reports that this feature, usually called the notch, would shrink considerably in the iPhone 12. That’s not going to happen, if the image that leaked out Thursday is legit.
7 features Apple should steal from Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra
Samsung’s newly unveiled Galaxy Note 20 Ultra will have to take on the iPhone 12 Pro Max after Apple launches it this autumn.
Samsung’s top-tier handset offers seven features iOS fans should hope will show up in Apple’s next flagship iPhone. But the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra also has some real problems.
Ring of magnets could make iPhone 12’s wireless charging easier
The new iPhone 12 chassis could include a mysterious circular array of 36 magnets inside its chassis, possibly to help with wireless charging, suggest new images posted to Weibo and shared by the EverythingApplePro Twitter account.
Apple has yet to release a native wireless charger for iPhone. Its most notable move in this direction was the AirPower wireless charging mat, which was announced by Apple and then canceled. Rumors since then suggest that Apple might be continuing work on the project.
iPhone 12 could get two separate releases
The iPhone 12 release could be staggered, with certain models going on sale before others, a new report from Digitimes suggests.
This year, Apple is expected to release four iPhone models. These are likely to include a regular iPhone 12 in 5.4-inch and 6.1-inch models, and an iPhone 12 Pro in 6.1-inch and 6.7-inch variants.
Apple says new iPhones likely won’t land until October this year
The 2020 iPhones likely won’t arrive until October at the earliest, Apple said during Thursday’s earnings call.
“Last year we started selling new iPhones in late September,” said Apple CFO Luca Maestri. “This year, we project supply to be available a few weeks later.”
