Android may have a larger share of the smartphone market than iOS, but Apple’s Safari browser is still king of the mobile web. According to the latest market share data from Net Applications, Safari accounted for 61.79% of the mobile web traffic throughout March.
The latest figures show that Safari has actually gained more market share, jumping up from the 55.41% it saw in February. That’s despite Apple’s increasing competition from Android smartphones and tablets. It doesn’t look like Safari’s going to give up its lead any time soon, either.
Even though Google’s Android browser runs on a whole host of different devices from different manufacturers, it only managed to grab a 21.86% share during March. That’s significantly less than Safari captured, but it still saw the Android browser claim second place.
Opera Mini came in third with an 8.4% share, while Chrome came in fourth with a 2.43% share. Microsoft’s Internet Explorer browser, which runs on Windows Phone devices, claimed just a 1.99% share, while BlackBerry’s browser managed a disappointing 0.91%.
Apple’s Safari browser comes pre-installed on all iOS devices, including the iPhone, the iPad, and the iPod touch. It revolutionized mobile browsing when it launched on the iPhone back in 2007, allowing users to enjoy the real web in the palms of their hands for the first time.
