That's quite the size discrepancy.

The first reviews of the iPhone 12 Pro Max and iPhone 12 mini make both of them sound like winners. However, the two devices — which occupy opposite ends of the size spectrum — also elicit some caveats.

Many of the comments sound the same as earlier first impressions of the iPhone 12 and 12 Pro. But some unique observations apply specifically to Apple’s very large and very small handsets.

Here’s what the early reviewers made of the iPhone 12 Pro Max and iPhone 12 mini.

Good news, procrastinators — Apple still has stock of iPhone 12 Pro Max and iPhone 12 mini eight hours after they went up for preorder Friday. Preorders placed now will still arrive on the first day of availability.

But that’s not true of the HomePod mini. This small smart speaker can no longer be preordered for delivery on its launch date.

Update: The iPhone 12 mini, iPhone 12 Pro Max, and HomePod mini are all available for preorder now. The iPhone models will start delivery on November 13, while the HomePod mini will ship November 16.

More than the largest and smallest iPhone 12 models can be preordered Friday. The HomePod mini will be available to preorder that same day, too.

All three devices will go up at the same time, Nov. 6 at 8 am EST.

It’s decision time, America!

iPhone 12 mini versus iPhone 12 Pro Max: One of 2020's toughest decisions.
One of 2020's toughest decisions.

Like many other Americans, I face a momentous decision this week. A choice between two polar opposites, each with hard-core backers who say you’re stone-cold crazy if you don’t go with their pick.

I’m talking about, of course, one of the most pressing decisions of 2020: iPhone 12 mini or iPhone 12 Pro Max. They’re the most exciting iPhones in this year’s lineup, for very different reasons.

iPhone 12 sees strong start with twice as many preorders as iPhone 11

iPhone 12 has seen twice as many preorders as last year’s iPhone 11, while iPhone 12 Pro is proving more popular than iPhone 11 Pro, according to new estimates from reliable analyst Ming-Chi Kuo.

Apple’s newest smartphone lineup — the first with 5G connectivity — is thought to have attracted between 1.7 million and 2 million orders during the first 24 hours of availability.

With iPhone 12, Apple finally ditches its outdated ‘S’ naming. I couldn’t be happier.

iPhone 12: Say
No sign of an iPhone 11s in sight.

There was something big missing from Tuesday’s iPhone 12 event. And, no, I’m not talking about AirTags, AirPods Studio, a new Apple TV, Apple Silicon Macs or live attendees.

The thing that went missing was an “S” at the end of the new iPhones’ names. The demise of the naming convention to indicate alternate-year iPhones marked the end of an era. And it’s totally a good thing.

The wait for iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max is over. During its big “Hi, Speed” keynote on Tuesday, Apple showcased its latest flagships with a dazzling new design inspired by iPad Pro, super-fast 5G connectivity, and the latest A14 Bionic chipset.

The lineup also brings new color options, improved cameras, and MagSafe — but not as you know it. You can preorder yours this Friday, October 16, before the new handsets make their official debut one week later on October 23.

Those who plan to upgrade to iPhone 12 for its 5G connectivity may need to be careful about which variant they choose this fall. A new report claims only one will offer the fastest 5G technology.

While all iPhone 12 units are said to feature Sub-6 5G capabilities, one source claims you’ll need to opt for the largest, most expensive model to also enjoy faster mmWave 5G.

A new glass panel, supposedly destined for iPhone 12 Pro, might reveal the location of the handset’s new LiDAR Scanner.

In the image, shared Tuesday on Twitter by leaker Mr·white, an additional hole appears alongside the three camera cutouts in the top corner of the panel. Unlike all the other holes, which are left wide open, this one has a dark covering like that on the 2020 iPad Pro.

New images and video of a prototype iPhone 12 Pro Max allegedly fell into the hands of frequent Apple leaker Jon Prosser. This allows him to reveal that Apple’s next handset will have thinner bezels — but the notch isn’t shrinking.

He also served up details Tuesday on the upcoming iPhone’s camera that add weight to numerous earlier leaks. That includes a higher video recording rate, a Lidar sensor and more.

iPhone 12 Pro Max looks absolutely gigantic in new mockups

3D printed mockups of all four 2020 iPhone models might surprise some people. Especially the relative sizes.

Word of the first 6.7-inch iPhone first leaked out long ago, and plenty of additional details have since come to light. But even those who fully believe that Apple is prepping a super-size iPhone 12 Pro Max might not realize just how big it’ll be. Especially when compared to the 5.4-inch model the company is also supposedly working on.

Apple leaker Jon Prosser shared new details — including the alleged price and storage options — for the 2020 iPhone 12 refresh in a new video Monday.

Prosser said Apple will offer a pair of regular iPhone 12 handsets and another pair of iPhone 12 Pro devices. Each line will sport two screen size options — although the iPhone 12 Max will be the same size as the iPhone 12 Pro regular, while the 12 Pro Max will be biggest of all.

But you’d better be ready to shell out for the most expensive option!

The newest iPhone 12 rumor claims Apple will introduce four brand-new handsets this fall, including a compact “iPhone 12 mini.”

The smallest model could be different to the rumored iPhone SE 2, but not much bigger in size. It is expected to pack Apple’s latest technology — just like its larger siblings — inside the same design.

Apple’s 5G iPhone lineup is still on track for a fall 2020 release, according to one reliable analyst.

A recent report suggested faster wwWave handsets, which are expected to succeed iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max, may not arrive until early 2021. But those claims appear to be inaccurate.

Apple is expected to introduce its first iPhones with 5G later this year. But if you want an iPhone 12 Pro with the fastest possible 5G speeds, you could be waiting until 2021.

A new report claims that mmWave 5G, which is up to ten times faster than LTE, probably won’t make its way to iPhone this year. That means a successor to iPhone 11 with an LCD screen could be the only model available this fall.

Apple could release a half-dozen iPhone models next year. An industry analyst laid out new predictions for the 2020 iPhone lineup, saying some models will bring the latest 5G cellular technology. Other models will stick with slower 4G networking.

Apparently, people not interested in 5G won’t need to pay extra for it. And some top-tier models supposedly will include rear-facing 3D scanners for augmented reality.

Apple’s next-generation iPhone 12 lineup could introduce a more compact 5.4-inch model, according to a new report.

The handset could be a Pro model, despite its smaller size, with a high-end OLED display supplied by Samsung. And it could replace the 5.8-inch option we’re already familiar with.

The high-end iPhone 12 Pro Max, on the other hand, could get even larger with a 6.7-inch display.
